Jacobs Compares To Other Top MAC Soph QBs
Falcon signal caller ranks favorably with Leftwich, Gradkowski

Oct. 14, 2004

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore quarterback Omar Jacobs (Delray Beach, Fla.) has erased any doubt about whether or not the Falcon offense would miss a beat following the graduation of All-American Josh Harris (now with the Baltimore Ravens).

Jacobs (6-4, 224), who is in his first year as the Falcons' starting signal caller is second in the nation in total offense (341.6), third in points responsible for (19.2) and eighth in passing efficiency (159.5). All three totals are the highest for any sophomore quarterback in the country. Two other highly recognized MAC quarterbacks, former Marshall QB Byron Leftwich and current Toledo signal caller Bruce Gradkowski , also began their careers as starters as redshirt sophomores.

Through five games as a first-year sophomore starter.

A-C-I Pct. TD YDS Effic.
Omar Jacobs (2004) 188-129-2 68.6 14 1,532 159.5
Bruce Gradkowski (2003) 175-122-2 69.7 11 1,237 147.5
Byron Leftwich (2000) 182-107-6 58.8 10 1,327 131.6

too bad he stunk in the spring game this year. And we get to see him 2 more years after this!
Too bad for him he has to play at Toledo 2 of his 3 years........That's two losses right there.
I dont kow about that. I'm looking forward tot he game this year in the Glass Bowl. Jacobs and the Falcons offense are going to have a field day with that UT secondary.

As I told some NIU fans. Toledo is giving up 38 points per game on the road, but only 15.5 points per game at home. Our D plays inspired and much more aggresive at home. There will be no field day for anyone at Toledo. We are 28-1 at home in our last 29 games for a reason........the crowd gets the team going.
Can you guys starting recruiting qb's you can't give bad nicknames?

I am the biggest hater of the TM's of anyone, but I will admit that I was very impressed with Jacobs in the NIU - TMSU game. I read a lot of criticism about him and the team after the loss, but I was impressed with what he did right and how he did it. This is not a Roethlisberger comparison, but he did remind me a little bit of him, the way he just looked really comfortable out there, never seemed like he was panicked, almost careless. He made his passes look effortless. He will be good, which is a damn shame that he decided to play for the goatf'ers.

Another thing that impressed me was though he wears the TMSU uniform, he has not sold out on the position he plays. I saw very few runs from him. It is clear that he likes to throw the ball. Hopefully (for his sake) Turner picks this trait up from Jacobs.

If whaling on the likes of Ball State, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan has Rocket fans overconfident, that's fine with me.

I think RF was basing his prediction on recent history. Nobody said anything about BSU, WMU, or EMU, how you got that out of what he said is beyond me.

Continue to be a sensitive, clueless Falcon, thats fine with me.

I was trying to say -- as nicely as possible -- that I smell blood in the water.

"That's two losses right there."

I wouldn't assume that. Not at all.

I just hope you guys can take out NIU first. Not sure you can, frankly.

:snore: typical of a BGSU™ fan that is envious of Toledo. 03-wink

Those were your recent victories. Duh. Typical Toledo fan: clueless.

BTW, don't get so psyched about being at "home" against BG...frankly more people there prefer BG anyway.
I can solve this UT/BG bickering right now.....

BG, with Omar Jacobs, lost by 17 at NIU.
BG, with Josh Harris, lost by 9 at NIU.

Omar's a good, young QB. In DeKalb, the BG team he led was "dominated" according to Gregg Brandon.

RF - statistically your D appears to be much better at home. Of course, two of the better teams you've played against were played on the road, making your home schedule thus far much weaker than your road record. Also, don't forget that you'll have to face the MAC West co-leader NIU Huskies on the road.

See, that was easy. NIU wins on both counts. :D
With all this talk of who Toledo has played and who we have beat and so on it seems that the bgsu FANS FORGET WHO THEY HAVE BEAT, the same kind of teams, the only difference is that in the game Toledo could have ran up the score but we didnt, and you guys did.
Do I think that the falcons have a good team yes; does Toledo's Defence still need work yes, however I have seen all the games and can see big improvements. We are starting to play more aggrasive then I have seen in the three years that I have been here. And the matter is we have not hade a good defence the last three years and still went the MACC, to lose at Marshall in the last seconds of the game, and were one bad half of football at the doyt last year of playing for another. By the way Bruce is throwing alot more mid length and long passes this year and are running game is turning it up pretty good too.
Except for one small detail....I can't remember the last time the Huskies beat the Rockets, at home OR on the road. 04-rock :ownd:

All smack aside though, I think NIU has finally figured out the mentality needed to win it all. I'm looking forward to that game as much as the one with bugs.
When's our shot at SE Missouri State? Or maybe the next we play Temple and were up 60 pts. We'll play Bruce the whole game and pad his stats a little.

up pretty good too.
The Falcons were up 63 to whatever on Temple. It was fourth and goal from the 12.

Coach Brandon opted against kicking the field goal, because that might be perceived as running up the score.

So he called a run. And our third- or fourth-string tailback scored. On the ground. From the 11.

A week later, the Owls nearly beat Pittsburgh.

Omar is tough. This is a good team that had one very bad game against NIU.

I'd point to the Oklahoma game. While Toledo was getting embarassed in the Metrodome, Omar was leading the Falcons to 24 points against Oklahoma.

That remains the most anyone has scored on Oklahoma. In fact, mighty Texas couldn't score a point against Oklahoma.

And Omar is getting better every game.

Correct. Taking out the Minnesota and Kansas games we are giving up 32.5 ppg on the road.

And as for the MAC West Co-Leaders.......yeah, so? We are Co-Leaders too! 03-wink

Why is it so hard for birdbrains to understand that the Toledo team that lost to Minnesota and Kansas is not the Toledo team that will be playing against NIU and BG in November?

We had 10 of our 22 defensive players on the 2-Deep roster playing as freshman. Two others were sophomores playing for the first times in their career. That is over half of the 2-Deep defense playing for the first time.

Come November these guys will have a better understanding of our defensive scheme and a lot more experience. They will have a whole year of playing time under their belt.

Keep thinking with false pretenses because of how BG looked at Oklahoma and how Toledo looked at Minnesota and at Kansas. That will make Toledo's victory over BG that more shocking to you birdies.

I respect NIU and it's fans.Your offensive line and running game dominated BG-very impressive.Backup tailback runs for about 200yds. in a half and the backup QB also played very well.Next time you play BG you won't have to hold back your starters. I don't see how any Falcon fans can talk smack after your victory. Rocket fans are looking forward to a great game between the Huskies and the Rockets.
