Coaches Corner Starbucks 10/27/04

Opening chat was about MAC results last week and usual nonsense about bleak city of Cleveland, the burning Cayohoga River etc,,,which was later corrected by Baker who just returned from media days proclaiming downtown a revitalized city very different from its old image. . .

Of note -
UCF only D-1 team winless.
EMU @ BGU a game to watch: pretender or contender?
CMU had 500 yards @Toledo and Seymour fumbled within final minute of a 27-22 game.
Novak repeated how our O now has great balance and it's tuff for opponents to defend NIU. He continues to praise individuals like Haldi , Sheldon , Wolfe, Harris, Cieslak etc as well as O line in particular. When asked about any "unsung heroes,'' each member of D line was acknowledged....

WMU did what we anticipated and that Wolfe was a step away from repeating two more jailbreak TD's and AJ is no slouch either plus Frosh Griffin and Clanton were praised for contributing during practices....

When Craig Hess was about to ask Noval "THE QUESTION" of the day, . Baker joked then ducked. What exactly did coach mean when he said our special teams (stunk) - probably said (sucked) in WMU game?

There was a pause and JoeN said: " I thought it was going to be a hard question. I meant " We stunk ! period" and eveyone laughed at his honesty.
Joe also noted again Haldi's TD to INT ratio as nothing less than an amazing 53-18 indicating just how great a career he has had and is approaching several of Bork's records.

UT tix still available. Announcers encouraged listeners to attend BSU game as bowl reps begin paying closer extra attention to how teams travel or it can open doors for added TV games in next season....

Everyone then agreed not to talk anymore about Toledo until next week - then they all proceeded to use the "T" word many times.

Strothman was student athlete: 2nd appearance- He believes his class is first to have a winning season every year in d-1 football. He mentioned other Rochelle Hubs on NIU team and recalls when 3.400 Hub fans went to state palyoff game at Bishop MacN. (Rochelle hosts Kaneland tonite) It's the kinda football town where the last one leaving on a Friday nite turns out the lites. After his playing days end, he wants to make $$$$$ and perhaps become a manager of a sports facility.

LeVern Bolin- asst coach guest:(pronouned "Lee-Vern") "proud to be on Huskie staff and working for men like JoeN( an outstanding man!) and Phillips... .
Levern went from playing linebacker at WF to many assistant jobs before coming to NIU as D line coach and Craig Hess wisecracked about whether or not he ever owned vrs rented with all the moving he has done...(I thought it was a bad alley to explore and sounded very negative which was probably NOT his intention)...Levern sez D tackles don't make alot of tackles in our system, but they do the grunt work and alot of guys have really stepped up since beginning of the season. They are young and will get only better..Levern empasized more than once that football is truly the greatest TEAM game ever and Strothman and others do their job well.

BSU game. They too seek to play smash mouth football playing 2 TEs.
It has not been lost on players that UT has fallen in Muncie more than once having a vastly superior team. On D - NIU must again play fundamentally sound and fill gap responsibilities. JoeN again repeated Hoke 's teams play tuff and they are capable of beating us

When Levern was asked in which game did NIU D play its best this season, he repeated himself. Football is a team game and when Huskies win those are our best defensive games & not any one game played stands above the others.

Finally all three were asked what they do to unwind after a game.

Strothman goes out to dinner with family, and Joe remarked how he usually can sleep well before a game but cannot after games & goes home, watches more college games, thinks about what NIU could have done differently or better that day and plans for Sunday meetings plus gets ready to vote in coaches poll - all because he reallly LOVES COLLEGE football.

Baker closed by repeating how many different times, different highly favored teams have gone into Muncie and lost. Joe wisecracked : "Thanx - Bill, now I wont be able to sleep before games either."

After all those quotes T4H came up with, it appears that Joe is a flip-flopper of John Kerry proportions!!
I don't think traveling to BSU means anything to the bowl reps. If we were going to Toledo or Bowling Green or any game that was against a quality opponent I think it would matter.

This game should be over by half-time. I don't see a lot of people trecking to Indiana to see a team most good high school teams could smack around.

The point is to go see OUR team play, and hopefully dominate.

The difference between the MAC and the bigger conferences is that their fans don't need to see a good opponent - they go to see their team play.
