My email to him:

Hey Jim,

Nice meeting you at the Western Michigan game. I had a couple of
questions for you. First, why is our cannon at NIU barely audible. I
am sure you noticed that you could actually FEEL the one at WMU. If I am
not mistaken, ours used to be louder. Any way we could get it back that
way for the Toledo game?

Secondly, I know it is not a secret, but people are going to want to
take down the Goal Post after we beat Toledo on the 9th. Any chance that
they will let us do it?

Once again, welcome to NIU and I hope our athletic programs continue
to excel. Lets get that endzone facility built too!!!

His response:

Justin -
Thanks for your e-mail. Sorry it has taken me a bit to
respond...things here have been hectic, to say the least. Enjoyed
meeting you, too, at Western. It's always good to know we've got
Huskies in the stands wherever we go.

As for your questions - I spoke with Sue Hansfield, our director of
games management, and she said nothing has changed with the cannon which
would result in less noise. That's not the answer you're looking for, I
know.

As for the goalposts, we are very concerned about protecting both the
teams on the field and the spectators in the stands. Our main focus is
to make sure we keep people off the field after a game most importantly
to prevent any injuries; so, no, we won't be allowing fans on the field
after the Toledo game. I also know that those goalposts are very deeply
anchored into concrete underneath the turf and it's virtually impossible
to pull them down. As you may have seen last year, some very tragic
injuries have occurred to celebrating spectators when goalposts have
been pulled down. We are NIU are very keen on keeping EVERYONE safe.

Hope I've been of some help with your questions. See you on the 9th at
Huskie Stadium!!!! Thanks, Justin.
Huskiemobileman,
I'm kidding around when I say this, but what were you thinking? Why are you telling Peters that the school wants to tear down the goal posts? That's like Churchill and Eisenhower telling Hitler when and where D-Day will occur 4 days before it was set to begin.
If he didn't know that we would want to tear down the goalpost, he would join the ranks of Lee Corso in being an idiot. I don't think I let the cat out of the bag on this one. Phillips is smarter than that, and a hell of a nice guy. Props to JP&JP 04-bow
Maybe there is just less aluminum in the bleachers for the cannon sound to reverberate from, now that there are peope in the seats:)

It's more like askin the Saudi's to use their air space to attack Iraq. If a field goal post takedown is not supported by NIU, it wont' happen because of the field access problems. But for the recored, the post would come down if it ever happened someday, not out of the ground but it would snap off at the bottom.
they have also moved the cannon, it is now located in the south endzone. it used to be right next to the student section in the north edzone out of view in a little gated area, so maybe that plays into it too. i agree it could be louder, but i think visually it looks better there.
Could we use the cannon to tear down the goal posts? Hmmmmm.

I agree, certain parts of the stadium the cannon is very lowd and in other areas you can't hear it.
You would be able to hear it fine if we would ever close off both ends of the stadium. That place would get really loud if the endzones were enclosed.
With the addition of the north endzone party trailers/tents, the canon was moved to the SW corner of the field. That is weh I noticed the difference.
