Obviously more spots not filled help the MAC. Just as important are no additional bowl eligible teams from conferences that have filled their slots

Excellent work.

If you look at the chances of each of the remaining fence teams, it appears that the best bet is for one available spot to open for a 3rd MAC team. In order to get 4 or more, would require everything to go as expected, but add one or two upsets. Of the teams on the fence, I'm assuming the following get in:

Big 10:
Northwestern
Michigan State

ACC:
North Carolina
Clemson

Big 12:
Iowa State
Nebraska

CUSA:
Southern Miss
Cincinnati or So. Florida

Big East:
Connecticut

WAC, SEC, Mtn West:
No fence teams qualify. La Tech, Nevada and Hawaii need 7 wins.


Based upon these guesses, adding the teams already in, the two teams from the MAC, and one from the Sun Belt, and I get 55 teams, leaving the door open for one additional team.
