Other than Miami, this conference must suck. I certainly don't believe this, but conventional wisdom says that if a team with no offense and no defense beats other teams, that those teams must be even more sad.

Very few people (other than Rocket fans) have given this team any credit. It was funny during the season when all of the fans on these boards were talking about the teams that will be playing in the postseason, everyone left Toledo out of the talk because of the early nonconference losses (which surprisingly don't mean anything in the MAC). All season long, the talk was about BG and NIU. Unfortunately for the Falcon fans, they forgot that their team had to play in the Glass Bowl this year.

To be honest with you, I was nervous about the NIU and BG games, but I never lost hope of a MACC game appearance, or championship at that.

I am not trying to talk smack about T_le_ _ being the MAC West champs and [in six days] MAC champs, but I do feel good knowing that everyone that wrote the Rockets off this year were wrong for doing so.
Any NIU fan that wrote off Toledo is a fool simply due to the fact that you folks have beaten us to a pulp on the football field for many years.....
BTW, I want to reiterate that I think that the top teams in this conference are damn good teams. Don't take the first line of my post as an actual smack against the others.

I get your point, but I find that rant unnessecary simply due to the fact that you are MAC West Champs and beat BG and NIU, and those facts speak for themselves.

Actually, while it should, it won't. Some of our neo-Marshall fans to the near south were already claiming superiority prior to last Tuesday's game even if they were to lose. Spelling Toledo as T_le__ has been the running joke around here all season. The ironic thing about that is, if the Rockets beat Miami in the MACC, I believe they would have a case for being the best defensive team as well as the most explosive offensively. They've certainly convincingly beaten teams making that claim themselves.
Remember, last year everyone wrote off Miami & Ben due to the opening loss to Iowa. While I wasn't happy as a Miami fan, I certainly snickered at some of the comments which acted like Miami was a farce. If anything, the lack of pressure helped Miami creep its way back into things to where they became the eventual non-BCS darling.

In other words, don't assume too much based on early season, non-conference losses. They do affect rankings, etc, at the end, but they aren't the whole picture of how good a team becomes over the course of a season.
When the Rockets have it in "gear" (i.e running and throwing well) like the 2nd half of the BG game, they are down right scary good. Their D seemed to really "step up" but in the first half they were non existent to a degree, so I don't know what to attribute that to (2nd half adjustments by Tom?).

Not too many NIU fans thought Toledo was going to beat BG though.

I think that was called wishful thinking....

We wanted Bowling Green to beat Toledo. Figured if we could talk everyone on this messageboard into believing BG would win, it would happen. Too bad they decided to settle the argument on the field.

If it makes Toledo fans happy, I'll be the first to predict a Miami victory next Thursday. The Redhawks have a great defense and their offense is swell too.

Feel better now that it's off your chest?

What I find interesting is how many Rocket fans forget all the respect that was thrown their way in the offseason, and how the argument was not about whether Toledo would win the MAC but whether they would go undefeated and challenge the BCS. You see - you were expected to be in this position, and you created your own adversity by getting the snot beat out of you by two BCS teams that you easily could have beaten.

It's not the rest of the MAC's fault that the powers that be made you prove your worth on the field. You did - congratulations. But keep in mind that we all thought you were going to be so good that you were one of the few MAC teams actually expected to be the MAC's salvation against BCS teams in '04. So when you failed in dramatic fashion, you deserved some ribbing - especially after you yourselves were talking 12-0 and Fiesta Bowl.

Congrats on a great season. But you made your bed this year, not everyone else.
Valid points, Dan.

Dan,

Going into the season, I thought that the Rockets would lose one game at worst (Minnesota). So yeah, my expectations were higher for atleast one of the three out of conference games and I thought they would beat Miami, but my point was that everyone wrote the Rockets off. What irritated me the most wasn't the jokes, but the fact that Toledo was always left out of the postseason talk. People really did give this team no hope of doing much in the conference (other than Rocket fans). This is the reason that I am happy that Toledo proved everyone wrong.

Other than Okie, you've pulled the biggest flamer on this board and a guy who roots for Kent but thinks Marshall is the cat's ******. That's not quite the same as everyone writing Miami off.

I think that most people were shocked and disapointed in how Miami played against Iowa, but a few games in it was apparent that the game was an abberation.
I wasn't on this board last year during the football season, but I remember getting into a lot of arguments (with OSU and UM fans) about how good of a QB Roethlisberger was. They all said that he would be average at best in the B10, blah, blah, blah.

To be honest with you, the only people that I remember semi-writing Roethlisberger off was all of the fans on BG's message board that said he had "Bust" written all over him regarding the NFL.
Wow, I just read through that thread and I must say that I am surprised at how wrong a high number of posters were back then too. The Miami and Toledo comments couldn't have been more off. Though I remember watching the MU-Iowa and UT-UNLV games and feeling a little disheartened afterward, I never felt that way about either QB's. Completely idiotic posts by those involved...I'm not naming names, but you know who you are.

I am guessing that these guys are the same people that said things like Wally Sczerbiak is overrated or Jonathon Goddard is a defensive disappointment, etc. If they didn't say it themselves, they probably backed those up that did. :withstupid:

You quoted a Kent fan.......like Kent fans know anything about football. :D

You also quoted a Herd fan, Herdon to be exact. Herdon has been banned for slamming every single team and fan in the MAC, outside of Marshall.

As for Okie, I think it was more of a joke in regards to the INT's he threw.

Finally, after Ben and Miami beat Toledo at the Glass Bowl in 2002 I think it is safe to say that all Toledo fans gave him respect and knew he was a very good QB and would make Miami tough. After all, that game in 2002 is the only loss at home for Toledo in their last 31 home games.
