There are several rumors circulating on the BE and CUSA boards respectively that ECU and Memphis may eventually defect from CUSA and join the BE. If that occurs, which is not entirely implausible given the 12 game schedule allowance that will undoubtedly go into effect (i.e. $$$03-wink, what would Marshall do? Marshall would be stranded alone in the east without regional conference competitors. I think that such a development would have a seriously detrimental affect on Marshall’s attendance figures and athletic budget given the travel demands.
I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Not much in the way of contigency for something that may never happen. ECU is stranded right now, even in CUSA. We are 7 hours away from them and that's the closest team to them.
I am not trying to flame anyone or be rude, but my question is why would anyone want ECU? From what I understand they are not exactly a football or basketball powerhouse. If I need to be corrected please let me know.

We’re not so naive as to believe that conference membership is strictly a matter of performance meritocracy, right? Certainly, CUSA is not contemplating rescinding UCF’s prospective membership based upon this season’s lackluster results. It’s conference by numbers, and the number of notches in the W column don’t always add up to the most lucrative numbers in the decisive $$$ column.
yeah but remember, the big east is also the conference that kicked Temple out for their crappy performance. Would they really be setting themselves up for another chance at something like that?
My only asssumption is they have very good attendance even in bad years. TV market cannot be a factor as Greenville is in the middle of nowhere and very few from Raleigh Durham care with NC St., Duke and UNC. It does seem like a strange fit. Memphis is a different story but I haven't heard that rumor
rumor is it wil be fb only.. ECU brings nothing to the table.. it was started by an ECU fan... rumor says ECU and some mystery team... doesnt mention Memphis.. both would have to find a viable place to put other sports.. and that is hard to do. ask marshall ie... 3 years ago when cusa was considering them for fb only.
The Big East is trying to validate their conference after the losses of Virginia Tech and Miami - the best two teams they had.

Firstly, adding Cincy and Louie are less an equal additions (although the Cardinals are having one heck of a year).

Secondly, East Carolina's program has been in a steady decline for over 10 years.

Although logic tells me that the Big East is trying to strengthen their conference, probably just rumor.
Memphis would be an asset for the BEast right now. They are not far from being attractive to the SEC. If a school like ARK were to leave the SEC to go to the B12, for instance, Memphis would be odds on favorite to take their place. Memphis is too big for the Cusa now and they know it. For potential, ECU is not bad. FB is down but potential as measured by some tradition, budget and attendance is substantial. If they would upgrade BB, the BEast is the right place for them. Their baseball is top 5 or 10.
The disparity in the programs of the Cusa is why their future is in question. For instance, if Marshall wants to be a top program, Pruett will soon get a raise in the $1M per yr range. That is what ECU is budgeting now for a new coach I believe that that is about what Marshall was counting on to cover increased travel expense. Do you want to have a happy coach and hitch hike to games or what? Cusa is not as stable as one would like to believe.

Good point. The Big East teams do need to find ways to guarantee wins, so bringing in a patsy does make a lot of sense. It's so clear now, thank you.
intangables are what sell conferences.. TV market.. size of school.. reputation... local support.. Ecu has some of these but not very many.

I agree with the first part, but not the second.

If Arkansas were to leave (which ain't gonna happen unless they have reasons to prefer the Big 12 we don't know about), the SEC could have who it wants. Miami (Florida) comes to mind.

Take that to the bank.
Major Glass Bowl expansion, new bball arena and indoor practice facilty all in the works.

Ya, I put that atop my Christmas list, right above immortality, world peace, and the Powerball… any one of which would categorically restore my faith in Santa Clause.
Pretty please Santa.
