Corrigan To Serve As Consultant To UB Athletics

Has served as Commissioner of Atlantic Coast Conference and AD at Notre Dame and Virginia

BUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo announced today that it has engaged Mr. Gene Corrigan to serve as a consultant to the University on intercollegiate athletics excellence. He will work with UB Athletics, University Administration, UB faculty and staff as well as other stakeholders on an assessment of the current programs and recommendations on how the University can achieve its competitive goals within the Mid-American Conference. This program review is a component of the University's overall strategic planning process UB 2020. It is also anticipated that he will assist the University in the upcoming search for a permanent athletics director. Mr. William Maher has served as UB Interim Athletics Director since Summer 2003.

Corrigan is a former Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He is a member of the Duke University Hall of Fame, and he has served as the Athletic Director at Washington and Lee University, the University of Virginia and Notre Dame University. Mr. Corrigan became ACC Commissioner in 1987 and held the position for over a decade. In addition to his ACC duties and as an athletic director and college coach, Corrigan also served a two-year term as President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

As a consultant, he has worked extensively with both the Mid-American Conference and several member schools, including Miami University, the University of Toledo and Ohio University, in providing a program assessment and making recommendations for program excellence.

Corrigan will work with UB in reviewing its strategic plan for continued improvement of athletic competitiveness and excellence in the MAC. Corrigan will assess the current program and departmental plans, and make recommendations on achieving the goals the University has within the Mid-American Conference. The review will include consideration of UB's current program and resources, as well as a UB comparison to MAC schools and other peer institutions. His report to President John B. Simpson is expected to be completed by March 2005, at which point a national search for a permanent athletics director will commence. A search committee and chairperson to lead that effort will be named early next year.
