Nutt encourages coaches to support UA, All-Stars

BY TERRY J. WOOD -Northwest Arkansas Times

Arkansas head football coach Houston Nutt never lacks enthusiasm, particularly when he is talking football.

Nutt enlivened the proceedings at the annual Arkansas High School Coaches Association Clinic Friday morning, encouraging coaches to be role models in their schools and for them to stand up for the state's football programs.

The clinic is held each year in conjunction the Tyson/Arkansas Coaches Association High School All-Star Week.

"We're role models," Nutt said. "We have to accept and embrace that. The kids look to us. When they see you talk to a teacher, they say, 'Oh, that's how you talk to a teacher' ... They learn from the way you conduct yourself."

Nutt thanked the coaches in attendance for participating in the All-Star week and had no qualms in asking the coaches to support the games and the state's football programs.

"Hey, I'm going to be honest and up front with you guys," Nutt said. "We need your support and the other coaches in the state need your support.

"I don't like to read in the papers about our All-Stars going out of state. I also don't like read about players being selected and not coming to play.

"I like the attitude Coach (David) Alpe had at Malvern. When his kids were picked he had them play because it was an honor."

Nutt did not mention any players in particular, but Jonesboro's Greg Jones, who signed with Tennessee last February, was selected to the All-Star game but was a no-show for the event.

Jones, who was born in Mississippi and lived in Louisiana prior to moving to Jonesboro was considered to be one of the top recruits in the state last season.
