EMU wants UT to forfeit over video

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

In an ongoing controversy involving an exchange of game videotape, the interim president of Eastern Michigan University has demanded that the University of Toledo football team either forfeit its 42-32 win over the Eagles on Sept. 18, or declare the game a tie and pay EMU $25,000 in restitution.

Craig Willis is not satisfied with the sanctions doled out by the Mid-American Conference in the affair, which involved an unspecified reprimand for unsportsmanlike conduct against the UT football program.

The flap revolves around one play that apparently was omitted from the video footage and script of the Rockets' 63-14 loss at Kansas. Toledo ran a fake punt in the Kansas game and it was allegedly not part of the tape provided to EMU. The Rockets executed a fake punt successfully in the third quarter of their win over the Eagles.

Normal protocol has teams

exchanging game videos of their previous contest during the week before they play each other.

MAC commissioner Rick Chryst issued the reprimand to UT after reviewing a report from a committee. In a statement released last night, Dan Brennan, chairman of the UT board of trustees, seemed disgusted with the whole affair.

"It is unbelievable to me that this issue is getting this type of attention," Brennan said. "Not only have we respectfully accepted the MAC's ruling, we've apologized and apologized again. But apparently that's not enough for the interim president of EMU. If he thinks he can threaten us into giving into his outrageous demands, he is sadly mistaken."

A spokesman for the UT athletic department said Rockets coach Tom Amstutz was preparing for the Dec. 27 Motor City Bowl and would not comment.

Willis has indicated an intention to bring the matter before the MAC Council of Presidents at its next meeting and ask for additional sanctions against UT.

EMU needs to get over it. UT has proven they are the better team. GEEZ! This is hilariuos. Bush league at best.
.......What's really bush league is a supposedly championship-caliber team intentionally editing out a trick play from their game tape!!
I am apalled !! I think the ? on everyone's mind is .....What did Coach Amstutz know, and when did he know it?? Why, this just smacks of a lack of videotape control!!
(ducking................)

Hmm... If UT has to forfeit, what would their
MAC conference record be? 03-wink 03-wink 03-wink
First, let me state that our interim prez is a solid, standup guy. Sadly, he is probably the best prez we have had in the last 15 years.

But...it serves no purpose to push this issue any further. The game is over and done with, the MAC has issued its ruling.

In the words of Officer Barbrady: "Move along folks, there's nothing to see here."

This reminds me of those people who get coffee spilled on them or claim to have been sexually harassed, so they strap on the ol' neck brace and ask for money because that will fix all of the problems. Good luck with that one. :chair:

That's funny. I remember one that my friend used to quote all the time and I thought it was from Barbrady: "Move along you looky-loos, there's nothing to see here." Very similar and I think it is Barbrady also.

I thoroughly disagree. So now it's OK for every MAC team to edit plays out of their game tape and blow it off with an apology? Toledo should bear full responsibility and accountability for their cheating whether it means forfeiture, fines or whatever.

they did, but it's not good enough for EMU. This is like getting in a car accident and having the judge order you to pay $5000 in restitution but the other person says that's not enough, I want $25k. UT apologized and followed what the MAC offices said, and I don't think they should give in to some yahoo that think he's higher than the institution which his school belongs(MAC).
The MAC made their ruling, no one is forfeiting. There is also no REAL proof that Toledo intentionally left the play out.

And EMU is just whining because that is the same exact fake punt play we used several times last season with Erik Faasen.
I just don't EVER want to hear how Chryst and the MAC are screwing over Toledo.

This is a complete gift to U[sic]T.

Brennan should learn to shut his pie-hole. What a prick.

No, this is more like intentionally injuring someone in a car accident and then thinking you don't owe them any compensation for their injuries, other than a get well soon card. That is not accepting responsibility for your actions. EMU should be compensated and UT penalized. I'm a little shocked that Chryst is looking the other way but regardless, honorable institutions impose sanctions upon themselves when these infractions are uncovered. Now any MAC team can cheat with their game films and the league office has no moral authority to impose any discipline other than a reprimand. This sets a bad precedent for the MAC.

No kidding. He wouldn't dare make them forfeit, but it's a pretty underhanded and petty thing to have done.
EMU has already been compensated.
By Toledo having atleast as many ticket buying fans as they did in attendance at their own home stadium.

I don't think it was petty at all; I think was done with the knowledge it could tip the balance in favor of UT in a game they absolutely had to have...

With Toledo having steamrolled their tough competition these last few weeks, it can be difficult to remember that UT was on the ropes going into this game. They had been absolutely annihilated yet again in OOC play, while EMU was clearly coming on. An EMU upset was certainly possible.

Toledo's dominance in the MAC is the result of extraordinary coaching; particularly an incomparable offensive scheme and an endless repetoire of trick plays designed to keep defenses off balance.

Had EMU known this particular play was coming, they may have stopped it, and had they stopped it, this entire season may have been different for both teams...

Sure.
This is more than a travesty. This is a travesshamockery. If Coach Fatstutz wouldn't have kept that play out of the video, U [sic] T would not be MAC champions. Actually, Coach Doughnut would have been lucky if the Rockettes would have won any games this season because U [sic] T would definitely have been in a downward spiral had they not edited that play out and lost the game to Eastern Michigan. Just think what a defeated season would have done for the Rockettes this year. Had they not won any games, fans would not be coming to see T_le__ games, causing them to be placed on probation for their attendance issues. Within three years, U[sic]T would be playing 1-AA football. This is why I hate that team up north. This is the most heinous, despicable, and utterly repulsive act that any coach could ever pull. TTUN really needs to get rid of Coach Num[sic]nutz and that loudmouth Bre[sic]nnan. I [sic]want to puke after[sic]Brennan's com[sic]ments. Also, has any[sic]one considered reprimanding TTUN for the "Gong" sound it played on third down of the BG game?

Woody Hayes: the real orator of "that team up north"

It was not a gift from Chryst, it was the only thing he could do.
A forced forfeit would make NIU the MAC West champ. So who would the MACC champ be? Would it be played over?
This was the only thing to do.

And Toledo is basically a decent program. We're not taking about Ohio State like accusations and pay for play. I think a reprimand is right for omitting a play Toledo uses with some frequency anyway and is their bread and butter fake punt along with one other pass play. Its been seen all around the conference.

I would agree with some comments though that UT was reeling at that point in the season and an upset was not unlikely from an ever improving EMU team. Sherrill had a pretty lousy game that day and he didn't get enough touches. That fake punt play was not the difference though.

The word is actually spelled T-R-U-E.

If Pruett had done this before a Toledo game, we'd have eighty different threads going about the horrible injustice done to Toledo, you'd all be screaming about it for the next ten years....

I'll be the first to admit that if Pruett did it, it would be a traveshamockery also.

The only logical thing to do now is hand the MAC championship trophy to NIU.
