Bored sitting hear in Florida while the wife puts our daughter to bed.

Allow me to throw some red meat on the table...

Joe Novak will be entering his 10th season at the helm of the Huskies next season. Joe is certainly deserved of lots of credit for the job he has done in building the NIU program from the ash heap. Still, Joe has yet to win the MAC. He also has yet to be successful in getting NIU placed in a semi-decent bowl (no Virginia, the Silicon Valley Football Classic is not semi-decent). As we all know the world of major college football is all about winning, and winning now. This year alone we have seen four coaches fired after being on the job only 3 seasons (Ron Zook at Florida, Ty Willingham at Notre Dame, Gary DiNardo at Indiana and Gary Crowton at BYU). Everybody on this board (myself included) keeps professing how NIU keeps moving up the scale of college football. Shouldn't winning, and winning now, therefore be the expectation in DeKalb just like it is at other places across the country?

If Joe Novak fails to take NIU to the promised land in 2005, then I will make the bold pronouncement that it will be time for Joe to go no matter what his fine accomplishments in the past. If NIU doesn't win the MAC in 2005, then my hope will be that Joe retires gracefully. If Joe is unwilling to do that, then I fully expect John Peters and Jim Phillips to do the retiring for Joe.

I open the floor to debate.
Do not underestimate the job that Joe Novak did turning nothing into something very special. Joe deserves a lot of credit for winning consistently and for winning with class. He has succeeded at something that many have previously failed at, and he has resurrected the Huskie pride in this 1975 grad.

There is a college team you might have heard of in Columbus Ohio (my adopted home town) and NIU is penciled in to play them in 2006. I hope that Joe leads NIU to a victory which would shock my co-workers.

Lets hope that Jim Phillips can succeed at fund raising so we can improve our facilities and keep things pointed in the right direction. As long as Joe stays put we will be competitive as far as the eye can see.
I would be shocked if coach Novak is not still at the helm for at least the next three years.
I would reply that NIU is not like other schools in the country, as far as the, lets win now attitude. I think because of our history, we are more tolerant of our program, and far more appreciative at how good it would be to build a consistently talented and successful team. I think that it would be nice to win right now, but I would be happier with 20 years of consistent success, rather than one season of playing in the Motor City Bowl and a MACC championship and 19 years of 1 win seasons.

The championships will come, it will take time. Again, I will bring my school studies into the conversation - the Chicago metropolitan area is currently on the verge of massive growth. Kendall County will be in the top 5 (MY prediction) fastest growing counties in the nation in 2010, and the Chicago metropolitan area can only move farther west. This will only fuel NIU's continued rise to the top - in all facets of university existence.

Why am I surprised by this idiotic ridiculous ignorant post, the source should say enough, but this is by far the stupidest post I have ever read. You just want to make sure Novak isn't around to play your Boilermakers in 2009, so that Purdue has a chance to win. Stay on your own team's message board from now on at
http://www.Iamabig10bandwagonjumperevent...school.com

So by the end of the Big 10 year had you converted to be a Wolverine fan after your Purdue team went into the turtle?

People like you are a joke, you cling to these teams that you have no affiliation with while simultameously urinating on and insulting your own school, what a freakin disgrace.

Hey let's get on the blower and tell him to retire now!

Are you high, it is amazing what Joe has done for this program! My god we havent been to a bolw game in 21 years, guess who is taking us to one, JOE. Think of the losing streak, think of some of the horrible seasons. My god, we are one of THE most respected Mid-major programs there is! We have guys with the talent level to play in the NFL! We are lucky that we have the talent level and results that we get out of our team.

I love absolutley love HUSKIE Stadium, but my god that place is not the best place to play football. Our facilities are bad, we play really in the middle of nowhere, and still we are contenders with the likes of Maryland, Iowa State, and Alabama. Think of this we are going to play Michigan next year.

You can still see the steps forward this pregram is taking. How about we let Jor build this program to its peak. We still need a renovated stadium and practice facilities. Who caes how long he has been here, this is a program that is still growing. Plus next year he is going to have a ALL-AMERICAN honorable metion running back comeing back, O yea he will only be a Junior.

So niuAlum, go back to Purdue and BLOW THIS!

Getting that damn endzone facility (and more) built is the key. If this does not get done IMMEDIATELY, it would be a huge slap in the face to the greatest coach in the history of NIU. Where in the living hell is that fundraising campaign in a year we go to a bowl game? Are they waiting for the Spring issue of Huskie Tracks once again? Are they waiting for a year in which we get a few more losses to feed on people's sympathies rather than the excitement and national attention we have now? There is simply no excuse this time. And don't give me that crap about waiting for "Mr. Big Donor" again. Announce it, and they will come.
Do you think that we will be treated to actually seeing the artist renderings and model of the said End Zone facility at the NIU tailgate in San Jose? By God if I make this trip, I better be able to see this damn thing.

Forget about it. They will release the drawings only when the fundraising campaign starts, and that will only happen when the seed money is all in place; i.e., when the Big Donor pops his wad.
They show it to all the recruits. Also, they have a great opportunity to show the model to Californina or West Coast alums. Seem like a no brainer to me.

No.

Now, let it go.
Those of us that will be in San Jose at the welcoming reception Wed afternoon (part of the package) need to corner the AD and ask about the facility and the fund raising efforts to date.
I don't post here very often but I read what others write almost every day. To suggest that Joe Novak should retire is absolutely ridiculous. That he should get fired is even more absurd. He is the best thing to ever happen to NIU football and given the history NIU football I am willing to wait a little longer for that "next step".

Now what about Judson?

So the "consensus" is that I'm off my rocker for suggesting Joe Novak be replaced if NIU doesn't win big in 2005. Two conclusions from reading these posts.

1. 10 years at the helm isn't enough time to build a team capable of perennially winning the MAC and appearing in bowl games.

2. Topping out at being the 3rd or 4th best team in the MAC each year is "good enough." Winning the brass ring (i.e., MAC title) isn't important. Ditto becoming a regular attendee of bowl games.

===

Editorial...THIS is precisely what is wrong with NIU football. Winning ISN'T the expectation, rather having a nice time at Huskie Stadium and pretending to be a big time program IS. Pardon me while I puke.

If Joe Novak doesn't win the MAC in 2005 and take this team to a bowl, then he should step aside gracefully. If he is unwilling to do that, then Peters and Phillips need to show him the door.

Newsflash...there is REASON why Joe Novak's name is never attracted to key job openings around the country and why he is stuck making $160,000 per year in DeKalb while guys like Urban Meyer and Terry Hoeppner run circles around him. The reason is HE HASN'T ACCOMPLISHED SQUAT IN TERMS OF WINNING AND IS IN A SITUATION IN DEKALB WHERE THAT'S DEEMED PERFECTLY OKAY.

Meanwhile Miami, Toledo and Bowling Green are passing us by.

Moron, Novak's name is never mentioned because he is 3 or 4 years away from retirement, and why would he stop everything and change programs after the strong success he has started at NIU, why would you want to leave a job at this point, you are a brain dead idiot. You just cannot stand to see the huskies successful and to me that is a tragedy and an embarassment for someone who attended niu.

...and 90% of you wonder why NIU can't get a pathetic $8 million football facility built. "Hey big donors, we think Joe Novak is just swell...so what if we haven't won a MAC title and go to a bowl game once every 21 years (if you call the "football classic" a real bowl game)...winning isn't THAT important...now shut up and open up your checkbooks....you too alumni nation....you should feel privileged to pour money into a football program that has yet to win the MAC and has no real ambition to do so...."

You tell me doorknob. ARE the Huskies as successful as they should be at this stage? My answer is no. Call it the Michigan and Purdue blood that runs through my veins next to the NIU stuff. See, I have this peculiar little expectation that my alma mater produce a football team that actually WINS, WINS BIG, WINS SOMETHING MATERIAL and WINS CONSISTENTLY. What a notion.

Madd Dawg...I earned a BS degree at NIU and a MBA degree from one of those Big 10 schools you infer I so desperately wanted to attend. Thanks for playing...Alum

alum i really just wish you would sit back and think about some of the things you have said. Firing a coach that caused the niu football program to do a complete 180, just please take a few deep breaths and think about what you are saying. This program was in shambles when Novak arrived, I do not know if any other coach in the country could have done what Coach Novak has done over the past 5 years. People across the entire country do indeed know who Northern Illinois is now. Granted he may not be the best x's and o's coach, but who really is these days. I do not know if there is a more respected coach in all of college football.

1. Nobody is discrediting the great job Joe Novak did in building a NIU program from the ashes.

2. The world of major college football is all about "what have you done for me lately."

3. Too many NIU fans seem fixated on history rather than the present. As example, each week there are gobs of posts about NIU's "great" victories over Maryland, Alabama and Iowa State in 2003.

Some of you can continue to obsess over history. I chose to obesess about the present and the future. If Joe doesn't win something substantial in 2005, then it is time for this great man to be shown the door. No MAC titles and one crummy "football classic" appearance in nine years no longer cuts it for me. It shouldn't cut if for the rest of you either.
