I'm sure this has been discussed before, but now that the season's over, I want to know what everyone thinks about the upcoming NFL draft, and what you all see as our involvement in it. Some of the names to look out for...

Nick Kaczur, OT - Am I crazy to think that this guy could go in the first round? He's one of the best lineman in the country, and has been all four years of his career. I'm probably over-estimating him due to my bias. My one concern with him as an NFL scout would be that he is a walking penalty flag. He has the size, strength, speed, and intensity to start as a rookie, IMO.

Lance Moore, WR - Has he EVER dropped a pass? I used to think that he was "too small" or "too slow," but I'm not sure anymore. Marvin Harrison is 6'0" 185, and he's done alright for himself. Someone will take a "chance" on Lance in about the 5th round, and will be pleasantly surprised. Will he be a big-time star? I think the potential is there.

Kenny Higgins, WR - Kenny is more of an NFL prototype for a receiver. The guy does it all, and unfortunetly for him, he had to share the field with Lance Moore, or he would have been a star. I highly doubt that he'll be drafted, though, but may have a shot at latching on as a free agent. That said, there is a LOT of depth in the NFL at receiver - I would have swore that Carl Ford would be a starter by now.

Chris Holmes, TE - Tight End is the new darling position of the NFL. Chris is huge, and has some decent hands. I don't see him getting drafted, however.

David Odenthal, C - I'm a huge fan of Dave. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he does next in his life. Playing in the NFL will not be it.

Phil Alexander, DE - No more "Phil, Phil, Phil" chants. I always thought that Phil was very underrated. In order to make it at the next level, he would have to be like Suggs from Baltimore, and move to a rushing linebacker position. He's off the radar on all the draft sites, according to a friend of mine, and will probably remain that way.

Patrick Body, DB - Could a good UT player get caught out of position more often than this guy? With some of the weak secondaries around the league, I have thought that P-Body will get a late round look because of his ability to lay a hit on someone. The injury may hurt him though.

Discuss. :D
WHAT????? No Bruce???

Next year RedWing, next year after we win another MAC Championship.

Is Omar coming back or going early a la Daunte?

I'm going to disagree with these comments. Nick K is 25 years old and has a huge advantage over most other college kids in terms of strength advancement. The NFL scouts are probably well aware that is upside is limited. I saw him get pancaked by a rushing lineman from UConn on Monday night, and tapes like that will move him way down the draft. I just have not been impressed with Kaczur despite all the accolades he has been given with the 4 All-MAC years. Of course, I don't see everything that he does nor can I break it down further that what I've seen. He does have excellent size and good speed and is very athletic. Maybe the right coaching at the next level will make him a bona fide NFL player for several years - who knows. He does have a lot of heart and is undoubtedly up for the challenge. We'll see. I do remember watching Magic Johnson play in a high school tournament in which he scored 42 "quiet " points. After that game I remember saying he would never be a very good pro player because he couldn't shoot from the outside. I always remind myself of that when I give an opinion on whether somebody that is highly touted will make it in the pros.

Chris Holmes - no way. Anybody ever watch him try to block?

Lance Moore - maybe.

Ken Higgins - maybe.

David Odenthal - he'll be a very good businessman instead of an NFL player.

P-Body - probably the best chance of any of the Rockets based on his physical attributes and willingness to hit. Speed hides a lot of mistakes, but less so in the NFL.
Forgot Michael Broussard. A good college player, but I'm not sure that there's really a position for him to play on an NFL team.
I really think there is only two good draft picks out of this senior class and they are Nick Kaczur and Lance Moore. Even though Lance Moore maybe a little undersized he gets the job done. He has great hands and he is so clutch down the stretch when you need a big catch. Some of the maybes are Body and Holmes. Holmes has a good set of hands and is a good blocking TE so he has a good chance to get in late in the draft. Body is quick and a big hitter but he lacks good coverage skills for being a safety. If he would have developed these skills a little better in college Body would have a great oppurtunity to be drafted. Thanks seniors for a great season.
I believe Dave Odenthal plans to go back to Gemany and play f-ball in his hometown. I'm guessing that if he got the opportunity to play in the NFL he'd take it.
After watching some of the big name teams on TV, I would say that the biggest differences between the MAC and other conferences are speed and the quality of over-all team play. Body and Higgins might do well against the likes of Buffalo, but the results are not always the same against Minnesota, Kansas.....and UConn. Last year we had some decent seniors and nobody even received a free agent contract. Odenthal is really slow and Holmes goes down pretty easy for a 260 lb. tight end.
I think the one thing that hurts the MAC is their lack of a fan base. This yrs. attendance figures I saw on the Rocket Report are terrible. The Ivy League probably has higher attendance figures than the MAC. A D1 player coming out high school and having to choose between the MAC and the Big East.....it's a no brainer. Do I want to play on Saturday in front of a hand full of fans? I think the mean attendance #s in the MAC was somewhere around 15K. Pretty poor and definitely a detriment to recruiting. Everytime the announcers highlighted one of our players in the UConn game, there was always a "sob story" attached to highlight. Poor grades, poor family life, unrecruited out of HS......I'm not saying we should not take these guys but somebody should be interested in UT because it is a great place to go to college and a great place to play college football!

Marshall has built a pretty good program with JUCO's, poor entrance scores, tough backgrounds. I guess we could be talking about Ohio State!

Seriously,

I think that it is time to unload the bottom feeders from the MAC football conference. UCF was a good start. We can set up a system wherby the worst team must leave. This year it was UCF.

We can also ban NHL Hockey from the United States and convert this fan base to NCAA football. After that, soccer must go.
IMO soccer should go before hockey. 03-wink

Kazcur- 6th-7th round pick. Has size for a guard or right tackle in pros. The only knock against him is his lack of discipline. Too many penalties called on him this year.

Lance Moore, WR - 7th round pick. May be a #3-4 receiver (slot) in pros. Has potential but lacks size to be a big name star

Kenny Higgins, WR - No way he gets in pros

Chris Holmes, TE - Maybe Canada first then a shot but it would be a long shot.

David Odenthal, C - I think he could be a free agent signing

Phil Alexander, DE-

Patrick Body, DE- I hope NFL teams aren't that desperate.

I see 2 draft picks this year for Toledo which would be a step up from the past year.

Stats for 2004: 53 tackles (not bad) and only 4.5 sacks. Those are not NFL like numbers. Phil was our best DL on the team but clearly he is not NFL worthy. On a BCS team, Phil would be a backup. That's why I laugh when I see Phil's name anywhere close to the NFL.
On one of Gradkowski's TV interceptions I remember seeing Odenthal trailing the play and trying to make the tackle.....this is probably worth a laugh!
Kaczur - late 3rd Round or better if he does well in his All Star Bowl Games.

Body - late 2nd day pick, or free agent, but he will get a shot.

Besides that I do not think anyone will get a sniff in the NFL.

Maybe CFL, or Arena if the guys want to play. I think Moore would do well in Arena Ball.
