I am taking two online classes this semester, first classes since the mid 90's for me. For the one class alone my books and stuff will cost about $200 used! 03-banghead I need a book and a 5 tape VHS set for this one class.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I am in 6 classes this semester, so $200 for books seems extremely cheap to me. :(
I'm back too, 5 classes for me and a lot of time spent in the Media dept. I think my books cost about $250. Thats not bad my friends are paying close to 400-500 dollars.

Completing a degree or starting another one?

Finally completing one. I stopped with just 2 classes left back in the early 90's. I know that sounds stupid, but it was really tough with the job I had.

So with any luck I will have a degree after this semester. Something I probably should already have. Everyone I work with in my department has one, so I guess I am lucky to have the job I do without one.
i'll be back in the summer, fall at the latest. im officially off academic suspension, now its a money issue.
I feel your pain RF, one organic chemistry class and lab cost me about $350 in books and materials, most of which I never used. The good news is that congress is considering making college books tax deductible.
Listen to this bullshi+ UT bio department is making every student buy a clicker type thing for 35 dollars so they can take 5 point tests at random times in class, instead of using paper......WTF?
Is that because so many UT students can't write? 03-wink
factman, you are sooo funny...i wish i was just like u....! guess what its 10:55 and BGstd still SUCKS!!!congrats on that
Hey you guys this is just a peice of advice I myself used half.com all the time in college for books. It dramatically reduced the price of books.
I'm surprised some enterprising student hasn't created their own book trading website.

All you need is a list of classes......a list of required books..........and you have the potential sellers deal directly with the buyers, less a fee to you to list them. Say a few dollars per book.

Just an idea! 03-wink Too bad that whole internet thing was just getting started when I was there...I could have paid for school...while I was in school! LOL

I found my book for like $40 used on the Internet, but I have my first test already this week on chapters 1 and 2 and I want to make sure I have the book in time.

Congrats on making the effort to finish the degree! A lot of folks dismiss the idea once they get into the workforce. It doesn't necessarily make you any smarter and you may not even use the stuff in your professional career. But there's something to be said for making a commitment and following through. It's a good lesson for your kids, too.

I did a fast-track MBA a few years back; though my son was only 4 or so when I finished, he still asks me about the "other" school I went to and we talk about things like why a degree is important and why we have to study hard and do well in school. Good stuff.

Good luck this semester!
great in theory, but it would be a huge pain. For example, most of my books last semester could not be sold back(they weren't using the same books this semester), and also some professors actually wait until after classes start to let you know what book they're going to be using, tell the bookstore, etc. So you would have alot of people getting the wrong books and coming after your head. Let the bigger companies handle this headache.

along with half.com another place to checkout for used textbooks is amazon.com

And BGAlum: where did you go for your MBA?

Ok so if you need the book for this week, buy it at the bookstore at full price, order it online for the $40 and once it arrives, sell it back to the book store (they usually tell you how long you have for a full refund when you buy the books from them...). That's what I did the last two semesters. I always wait until the class starts to buy the books incase I get one of those great instructors that say " the book won't be that much help... just show up to class and take good notes" then I haven't spent big bucks to get 1/10th of the price back when I sell it back....

Thanks. That is a very good idea.

I earned my MBA at Eastern University. Lots of options here in the Philly area, but the combination of cost, faith & timing were perfect in regard to Eastern. Good experience and the degree has paid off.
If you're really trying to grab a bargain on a book - sometimes the public libraries have them. This is rare, but some actually are available. Often you can keep renewing because they are infrequently borrowed. OhioLINK is also a nifty program. Find the book at any Ohio college (via web database), order it, and within a few days it's at your University for pick-up. If you have taken an orientation class lately they may have pointed out the system and how the UT library works (they don't inherently tell you how to do that though!).
I've found it's worth a shot sometimes - it worked great for English classes.

Half.com was a HUGE saver in my time at UT. I use to go to the bookstore and write down the ISBN #'s to later do some online seeking. I enjoy the bookstore, but I never did like the book-buying process through them. I'm one to keep my books though - some of them are the best reference material I will ever own. "what do you mean you will only give me .50 cents for this book?? I would have more fun destroying it or actually reading it...."

Just be happy you're not in engineering - some of their books were $125-150+ a piece.
