Toledo, Fresno State to Play in Home-and-Home Series Beginning in 2005 at Fresno

TOLEDO OH - The University of Toledo and Fresno State University have agreed to a two-game series in football that will have the Rockets play at Fresno in 2005 and the Bulldogs making a return trip to Toledo on Sept. 6, 2008, UT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien announced today. Next fall’s UT-FSU matchup is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27 and is expected to be televised on ESPN2. The series will mark the first time the two schools have ever met in football, although Toledo played in Bulldog Stadium in the 1981 and 1984 California Bowls.

O’Brien also announced that the Rockets will open their home season in 2005 against Western Illinois on Thursday, Sept. 1. Toledo’s other non-conference opponent is Temple. That game will be played in Philadelphia on Sept. 17. The Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule will be released at a later date, O’Brien said. He added that the Rockets’ game originally scheduled at Syracuse next fall will be moved to a future date, probably in 2008 or 2009.

“Fresno State is another in a long line of outstanding opponents that have come or will be coming to the Glass Bowl,
We will be playing western Illinois at the Glass Bowl to open the season.
excited about Fresno, disappointed in the other 2 ooc games though
I'm not liking the home game with Western Illinois, but we might not have had much of a choice. Syracuse needed to change the date of our game and I doubt too many I-A schools really want to play us in Toledo next year.
I like the Western Illinois game to start the season. This gives us a chance to work out the kinks before we go out west, we seem to struggle in our first game of season in the last few years. I don't like that we have to wait to 2008 to get Fresno at home.
In case anyone hadn't noticed, the game against Western Illinois is scheduled for THURSDAY, September 1st.

A 1-AA school on a Thursday night. Wonder what kind of crowd we'll draw?

Kind of shoots tailgating in the @$$ too unless I want to burn a vacation day.

I guess they didn't want to schedule it for Saturday because that is Labor Day weekend. However, I for one would like to play our home games at our traditional Saturday evening, 7:00 PM kickoff time.
217 days until 2005 kickoff!!!
You say September 1, 2005 is a Thursday? Hm. I guess that means I'll be taking a Thursday night off to enjoy another Rocket victory. The cooler will be full, the grill hot, and the fans in shorts and t-shirts. I love late-summer/early-fall football games!
thats great the first or second week of class, and were playing football on a thursday night. There goes parking.
western illinois- BORING.
Man oh man---i hate when UT plays D-II schools---not a great way to gather a big first home crowd---ESPECIALLY on a thursday. Not a very strong schedule this year---which makes it even tougher to get in the top 25 given the chance.

In 2001 we opened the season hosting Minnesota on a Thursday. Granted it was a Big Ten school, but we had 34,950 in attendance. In 1999 we opened the season hosting Syracuse on a Thursday. Again, this was a Big East school, but we had 27,900 in attendance.

I would be surprised if we don't have at least 26K for Western Illinois.
Congrats, Rockets. Fresno will be a good OOC game for you.

1-AA's are a neccessary evil, unfortunately. There is little choice when the big budget boy$ are afraid to play you.

I hear you, Karl. I believe you might appriciate this contraption: <a href='http://www.grilllovers.com/shopItemDetail.asp?SID=&txtproductId=7791148&txtQueryID=&txtKeyword=&multiDept=&selDepartment=1&selClass=1&selPrice=&absPage=1&shopperid=9G9WNP9FR9K38LLV9H2TKTJT1RPN0VU4' target='_blank'>Grill-N-Chill</a>

Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I'm quite tempted but I can't justify over $2K for it.

THAT just might give a guy wood 03-wink But you're right, there's just no way to justify $2200 for it. Not for ME, anyway.

:crying: :crying: :crying:

Get there early! There will be plenty of spaces SOMEWHERE. 03-wink
SWEET!
This will be our season to go undefeated with Fresno St providing the only roadblock out of conference.
BG and NIU will be tough but of course very winnable.
