To be fair and balanced if I post an article of a WMU recruit not going to Kalamazoo, then I must too post an article of a Toledo guy who changes his mind and picks the Broncos.

Wheaton (Ill.) South two star ranked tight end prospect Matt Stevens (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) had given the University of Toledo his early verbal commitment back in mid-October, yet things have changed sine then and Stevens has decided to recommit to Western Michigan University.

"I have decided to commit to Western Michigan University," Stevens said. "I made an official visit to Western Michigan last weekend, and I decided then that Western Michigan is the best fit for me."

Stevens talked about having to call the Toledo coaches to break his original verbal, and Stevens also talked about why he's decided to become a Bronco.

"Calling the Toledo coaches was the most nerve wracking calls I've ever had to make. They were obviously pretty upset, but I told them that I had to go where I felt most comfortable, and that place is Western Michigan. I'm going to sign my letter of intent on Wednesday to Western Michigan University."

"My official visit last weekend to Western Michigan was just incredible. It was quite a visit. I had a chance to get to know the coaches and the players better. The campus and the facilities are top notch. It was such a good visit that I really wanted to stay there for a few more days. I talked everything over with my family, and they agreed that I needed to go where I felt the most comfortable."

"I have the utmost respect for everyone at Toledo, I really do. I just need to go with my heart on this decision. In the end it's going to work out for the best for myself. I'm ecstatic about becoming a Bronco."

Stevens will join teammate Grant Nemeth in signing to Western Michigan University on National Letter of Intent Day.
That's too bad about Stevens. He sounded like a good pick up for the Rockets.
Maybe he wasn't comfortable with the pressure of playing for championships :D
Alot of kids from DuPage County end up at Western. It's a good market, and I'll bet NIU being in the fold is helping the MAC recruit from there.

Wheaton South? How long has that even existed? It's odd to see new HS's spring up, when your hometown/county has had a population that's been nearly constant for decades.

Wheaton Warrenville South came in existence when Wheaton Central was closed back in the 90's.

Wheaton Central closed? That was Red Grange's alma mater!
Vandelay, isn't that story a "subscription only" report? If it is, did you get permission to print it on this forum? I know that EdgyTim has asked his subscribers to not post exclusive material on other web sites.
Thanks for the heads up Big Dog. Going forward I will post a summary of a published report. Not looking for any "copy-right" issues.

Yes indeed. School was closed I believe becasue it was just too small. Its now a Junior High.
Wheaton South and Wheaton Central are the same school. The physical building changed, but the faculty, mascot, school colors, and traditions all are the same. They just moved into a new school building South and West and changed the name. And remember too, when Red Grange went there it was Wheaton H.S. and not Wheaton Central, so I ask, what's really in a name ?

Yep, the old Wheaton Central high school is now a middle school. In the late 80's, Wheaton Central and Warrenville high schools were merged into what is now Wheaton South. They've turned out some very good division one athletes including Jon Buetjer - Illinois QB, and Nick Duffy - former NIU linebacker. In general, Western Michigan has had good recruiting success in Wheaton, including former Bronco QB Tim Lester.

Not in the late '80s (unless it was autumn of '89) In that time frame there was Wheaton North, Wheaton Central and Wheaton-Warrenville.

I'm getting the impression that Wheaton-Warrenville had it's name changed while Wheaton Central was switched to a Jr Hi.

I get the impression they do that sort of thing more in IL (ie New Trier) than in OH, but maybe it's more common around large urban areas where demographics change more frequently.

Torch,

When they closed Central they combined with the kids from Warrenville into Wheaton-Warrenville High. It was just this year that they renamed the school to Wheaton South.
