I am torn on this.......I love Sosa for what he has done and the energy he brings to the field. What I do not like is the attitude he displayed at times last season.
Hopefully this will be a new start for the Cubs. We still have the talent, and depending on what minor league players we get there could be some good upside.

I'm an Illinois Boy at heart, and Go Toledo Rockets!!!
Thank God we (Orioles) finally signed somebody!(There would have been an all-out revolt had they not picked up a power-hitter with the Delgado bidding that was going on) That said, Sammy only maybe has a couple of good years left, but with Mora, Tejada, and Delgado, we'll have a nice middle of the line-up. Plus, you Cub Fans get to see Jerry Hairston dive after the ball is 10 feet past him.(Doh!)

Now, does anybody have 5 starting pitchers they can lend us on the cheap? Please?!

BaltimoreHuskie
Sorry, make that Mora, Tejada, and Sosa - I've got Delgado on the brain!
Let Sosa's transition to being the on-field reincarnation of Jose Canseco begin!

if it hasn't already.
Thank god we are rid of this loser. I hope you all in Baltimore like strikeouts, especially in clutch situations. I would love to see the Cubs sign Magglio Ordonez for a year and see what happens with him.

It is going to be a new beginning for the Cubs this year.

Don't say sosa is a cancer, baker made him that way. Sosa was fine with every manager until baker, and I think this trade may be getting us cubs fans to ignore the part about baker not being able to handle a bullpen or a pitching staff.

All that being said we can't trade baker, Harriston is a local guy for the cubs, and can lead off. I think that's all we need, harriston will probably get to see at least some time in left. If we trade for Huff or Sign Burnitz we will be OK, but burnitz only can play in Colorado in chicago he'll be back to being bad in a heartbeat.

he wasn't fine with Don Baylor either...Baylor challenged him to be a 5 star player and he couldn't respond except for probably his best season in 01.

i didnt care if we got anyone in the trade to be honest with you..just to be rid of a problem like Sosa is fine with me. Jerry Hairston had a pretty good OBP last year and he is very speedy as well. Adding Mags I think will take this offense over the top..we got rid of the 2 guys that struck out the most in Alou and Sosa and adding 2 hitters that can actually hit without striking out in Hairston and potentially Mags, the sky could be the limit for the offense this year. Let's just hope Corey Patterson lived up to his word and worked on his swing in the offseason..if he can limit his strikeouts, that would be big as well.

My only problem is that Harriston is a "cancer" too.

Not sure it's a good idea to bring that type of player in.

A quote from cubs.com

An Orioles source told MLB.com that the two teams have completed the deal. WGN Radio and The Associated Press reported Sosa would have to pass a physical and waive his no-trade clause. According to the reports, the Cubs would receive infielder Jerry Hairston Jr., pitcher Jorge Julio and two minor-leaguers in return.

If Julio is involved this is a great trade.
Julio had a bad year last year, but the year before, he was one of the top closers in the AL. Only problem is, he reminds me a lot of Farnsworth...but we would actually have a closer and then Dempster can do a spot start and he can pitch long/middle relief now. Filled 2 needs in 1 here and now we can go after Mags.

I don't really want mags, anyone who won't let you check out his injury is hiding something.

he has been cleared to start working out for teams..I think he'd be worth the risk to sign a 1 year deal..if he gets hurt, we do have Hollandsworth off the bench and maybe DuBois as well.

Hollandsworth, another guy with nerve damage.

Not good. You have to run in the outfield.
Only problem is it says that the Tigers offered Maggs a 5 year deal, 55 million atleast (tribune) so I don't think he will be signing any one year deals from the Cubs.

I'm sure my White Sox will be happy to send you Joe Borchard.... he loves striking out, he'd be a perfect Cubs right fielder.

Aubrey huff is an option, but Drays want a lot of young pitching.
I'm not part of either the CUB nor Sox choir, but I offer this assessment.

Sammy was berry berry good for Chicago & bazeball - but things seemed to change following the corked bat incident. He always used his star power to do as he pleased in clubhouse with his radio blasting etc despite what other players and managers felt about his special treatment.

It's not a behavior among teamates to win alot of "Us vrs. them" comraderie yet it was tolerated because he produced and won alot of games and was a crowd pleaser among bleacher bums in partricular and probably helped attendance as well ....when his production began to decline and strike outs were not offset by home runs/RBI's , the admiration began to slide.

When he pulled the early out of the clubhouse stunt in the final game,
many of his teamates were probably pushed out of shape knowing they could not have gotten away with it. In public - players are expected to put on solidarity face, and it seems they have done so for the most part including the convention.

I dont blame Baker or the broadcast or management team for last year's downfall of Sammy. IMO - Both Sammy and Cubs need a fresh start. I don't ever see Sammy exhibiting any sense of conforming to clubhouse expectations. Like Jordan , star power allows very special athletes some extra privileges. When production declines and wins slip away - so does the tolerance by fans and teamates of an athlete's personal ego trips .

A trade is probably in the best interest of both parties at this time.
Julio- Ha! Yes, We got rid of him! Just wait you guys, this may be the WORST relief pitcher you've ever seen! Got to see him in person 76 times last year, and talk about a pitcher who can't think(or throw strikes) He is THE WORST!!!
Plus, Hairston, while not a clubhouse cancer, was a whiner who complained while Brian Roberts stole his job at 2nd and promptly had 51 doubles to lead the league. Hairston was atrocious in right field, couldn't judge a ball to save his life, and while he gets on base, he seems to go through prolonged funks, and cries about everything. So the real question is, which club subtracted more?

I'll give you the points you made on Sosa, a lot of the feud w. Baylor was probably his fault, but at the same time, maybe a change in scenery will make a difference(stop laughing HuskieMobileMan!) I'm just glad there's no more Jorge Julio! Enjoy the many balls hit into the street this season(maybe they'll make him a mop-up reliever, I'd hope for that)
SCOUTING REPORT FROM STATS INC.
Jorge Julio: Pitching
Julio throws an above-average four-seem fastball that regularly is clocked at 96-98 MPH. He struggles controlling the movement and location of the pitch, which is when he gets into trouble. The coaching staff has tried to get him to back off a few MPH to gain better control, but Julio reverts to throwing his hardest when he struggles. His slider usually is clocked in the high 80s. Sometimes Julio battles to maintain a consistent release point, and that plagues his slider more than the fastball. Despite being a power pitcher, he doesn't pitch inside enough. This allows hitters to lean out over the plate and cover the outside corner. Julio has improved his approach against lefthanded hitters and no longer struggles against them.
