And the award goes to...

After the annual NIU football banquet Sunday, the question was answered.

Sophomore running back Garrett Wolfe got to walk up and shake coach Joe Novak’s hand after being named the offensive player of the year.

"What a great day," Novak said. "The first couple years at our banquet, we really didn’t have much to celebrate. Now we do."

Wolfe became the third sophomore to receive a MVP award since 1977. After being named the back-up at the start of the season, Wolfe led the Huskies in rushing, scoring, total offense, and all-purpose yardage.

One of the 2004 quad captains, senior Brian Atkinson, led the team with 110 tackles and was the third NIU player to be named First Team All-MAC twice. Atkinson was named the defensive MVP.

Others receiving awards were receiver Dan Sheldon, who won the Fran Cahill Memorial Award for wide receivers, and tight end Brad Cieslak, who received the Jawan Jackson Memorial Award for the best achievement by a former walk-on.
I went, It was cool but a little long (4 hours). I really liked the highlight film. Haldi got a bunch of academic awards, Atkinson got a bunch of awards also.
I was there for the first 2 hours and 45 minutes, but had to leave for softball practice. Great turnout! I'd say in excess of 600 at least. The place was packed. Brad Hoey put together a nice highlight film that must have been at least a half hour. My favorite line of the day was Coach Novak talking a little bit about each game this year and he gets to the Toledo game and says "Toledo, how I hate to say that word." Great day for Huskie football, and a great send off to probably the best senior class ever!

Bring on Signing Day!!! 04-rock 04-rock 04-rock
Will they have the highlight video on dvd for fans to purchase?
Last year, season ticket holders received a copy on DVD.
I was there. Good food, great highlight tape. First time going to one, enjoyed it. Joe ended the banquet by saying "216 days till Michigan!"

I think season ticket holders received a different highlight video than what was shown at the banquet.

Its funny on how winning cures everything. I went to the early banquets and they tried to wrap the whole thing up in 1 1/2 hours. Now they can go on for 4 hours and everyone wants more.
Last I heard from a Huskie Club insider shortly following SVC was this. There is no s no plan like last year to make and distribute a highlight tape or disk to season tix holders or club members.

Booooooooooooooooooo !

It costs merely a few dollars to make a highlight DVD. Wouldn't a rational mind think that highlight DVDs could be produced for SALE to Huskie Club members and the general public to generate some needed funds for things like...ummm...facility enhancements?? Duh!!! :snore:
One would think so.
Let's see if I understand this right....

dinky indy bands no one's ever heard of can produce CDs for themselves to sell...

but the NIU athletic department can't mass produce even a run of say, 5000 highlight DVDs to sell at a smallish profit?

This strikes me as a no-brainer, not as a revenue source (since it would be a relative drop in the bucket) but as a simple promotional tool. Sell them in the bookstores and online- they ought to be able to move a small run of the DVDs.
There are copyright issues with the music the use to accompany the highlight video - is what I have been told in the past. But I can't see why they can't produce a music free highlight tape instead.
There NEEDS to be a highlight DVD produced every year and given to season ticket holders and sold to raise money for the department. I would hope Jim Phillips understands this. I played the 2003 DVD over the weekend as a matter of fact and I can't wait for the trip to the big house in september. I suggest we start sending professionally written e-mails or letters to Mr. Phillips and let him know how much this means to the fans and to the program.

Why not just use the tv/raido broacasts from comcast ie. the play calling. Or use the raido announcers. Just a thought instead of music.
better yet why not find some local bands to produce some music for the highlight tape. im sure theyd love some publicity. of course no one at northern would think of something so simple. 03-banghead

I hope not, although beggars can't be choosers, I guess. I did not care for the 2003 highlight DVD. I'm from the old school. I get goose bumps hearing a radio or TV announcer scream for your team on an exciting play. Loud rock music (or God forbid rap music) on a sports highlight video just does not do it for me.

Well said, DF. I know the highlight video produced for the banquet is designed to appeal to the players, and the music selections reflect that. Some of we "old schoolers" may like the visuals, but not necessarily the music. Like in '03, a DVD commemorating the '04 season will more than likely be produced. Contrary to the beliefs of some on this board the production and distribution of such highlights videos are rarely moneymaking ventures. I know a bit about media production, and it's not cheap, whether your using copywrited, subscription, or original music.

I believe most of Northern's production is done in-house. Might help to keep costs in line, but I'm sure time and resources are limited.
The cost to produce a high-quality video by an outside source would be very high. The school might be able to make a buck if there are several thousand of us who willing to pony up $20-$25 for a DVD. As much as I'd like to think such is the case I'm not sure the athletic department is in a position to take the financial risk.
However-being the Huskie fan that I am- I hope that they will!

Last years did have a lot of rap but it seemed like this year they tried to make the music appeal to a wide variety of people, plus I would imagine that rap songs were the ones that Boogie's friends did and gave them permission to use the songs.

The video they showed the other day at the banquet had 2 rap songs and I think the rest were rock songs. Also for the ol skool folks they had some "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith. Hopefully this will cover all bases a bit better.
I wish they would sell DVDs of the film breakdowns--offense, defense, line play, etc. Just like the old days with Fletch in the basement of Grant North or Ippoliti at the Union.
