By Reggie Hayes rhayes@news-sentinel.com

Thomas Hammock is returning to a familiar locale – the backfield at Northern Illinois University.

Hammock, a Bishop Luers High School graduate whose playing career was cut short by a heart condition, accepted a position Thursday as Northern Illinois running backs coach.

Consider it another step en route to his ultimate goal of becoming a head coach.

“It’s a natural fit for me to go back there and get back to the program that’s given me a lot,
2021- After beginning his career as a GA at Wisconsin and assistant at NIU followed by stints as an assistant at Iowa and Colorado and as offensive coordinator at Missouri, Thomas Hammock is announced as the new head coach at Northern Illinois in a press conference at the Novak Center at NIU's 45,000 seat Huskie Stadium.

It's going to be great to have a young Huskie as a coach!
Awesome news. Good luck Coach Hammock.

Let the era for the NEW Cradle of Coaches begin. :)
Thomas got the job over Leshon Johnson? This is a travashammockery!!! (did you notice hammock is in that word? pretty clever, huh?) Who is going to train our dogs to fight now?
This is a win win situation.

Welcome home - Thomas!

One of many things NIU never did well pre-Novak is keeping many former Huskie greats with coaching interests/ambitions involved with NIU.

Do I smell more $ having been available to make such an offer attractive on its merit rather than simply the natural connections?

( PS: Whiteside and Armato were among first I can recall in awhile. Anyone else recall Huskie greats being offered meaningful roles with NIU shortly after graduation?)

If an opening were to become available and he was interested, would you hire Kenny Battle as an assistant?

How about also taking a chance on someoone like the young male coach of the girls at Brooks /Chgo HS for NIU women's team? New blood with ties to Chicago could not hurt. ( eventually get RCollins involved!) How about Carol Owens of ND? Bring back another former Huskie great !

hey , just a thought about how to help build a stable and loyal athletic dept.

PJ will be receiveres coach someday (hopefully years from now after a surprising rise and succesful run in the NFL). (Later will be offensive coordinator.
PJ and Hammock will be reunited at some point in time done the road
That reminds me that Edgar Bennet (fairly recent packer RB) was named RB coach for the packers....

kind of the same thing...right?
