This isn't about Marshall. It's about Western Kentucky.

It will be absolutely poisonous if we allow turds like Flashy to keep popping off as he has been.
I think a more effective solution is for us to "police our own." Every time some jerk like Flashy spouts off, maybe we should make it clear that he doesn't speak for the rest of us. I would certainly welcome WKU to the MAC and will do my best to discourage ignorant "redneck" comments. WKU fans are smart enough to know there are always a few rotten apples in every bushel.

I'd feel a lot better about taking that action than I would effectively censoring someone for being stupid.

SF you are right to a certain extent. I have been known to throw around a hillbilly joke from time to time, however it was never directed at marshall. I usually call someone a hillbilly or “neck
Well, if the cousin jokes are offensive, fine, but I will always crack on Marshall for being what it is- a bunch of rejects from other schools whose ego's alone will fill any stadium! I have serious issues with the university. As a BGSU grad, I have much less of a problem with Toledo than I do with Marshall. I am really glad they are leaving the MAC and I am really glad we are all delivering butt whippings to them on their way out. There is no possible way for Marshall to sustain the success they had when they first returned to the MAC. They are too small a university with nothing to offer culturally or geographically to big time ball players. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
I was born in Indiana and I lived in Ohio, but I spent most of my life in Kentucky. I received my degree from WKU (BS civil Engineering) WKU is located in the middle of the state (north-south direction). To us a hillbilly (in our state) is some one from eastern Kentucky, so when you guys make hillbilly jokes we usually think that you just have not traveled much and do not know what you are talking about. The funny thing about people from the northern states making fun of people from the south, when it comes vacation time most of you guys head to the south. I have a lot of relatives and friends that live in Indianapolis. Lots of times they take vacation time in the summer to visit us. They sure like to visit us even though we are from Kentucky. It could be because we have a nice large home on a lake, boat docks behind the house with a couple of boats sitting on boat lifts. Their idea of a vacation is what I live every day. If you are happy where you live that is great because I am happy where I live. I am also looking forward to WKU playing in the Mac.
Just my 2 cents on the Marshall fans.

My opions have been drawn based on the following:
-traveled to Huntington in the fall of 1997 for the OHIO/Marshall football game
-attended 1998 OHIO/Marshall football game in Athens
-attended 2000 OHIO/Marshall football game in Athens
-attended 2002 OHIO/Marshall men's basketball game in Huntington
-attended most if not all OHIO/Marshall men's and women's basketball in Athens from 1997-2001

In the '97 football game Marshall fans cursed at and taunted OHIO fans and band members during their 28-0 rout unprovoked.

In the 2000 football game in Athens (I think it was 2000 that OHIO actually won a game vs. MU...) I witnessed Marshall fans again cursing OHIO fans and several fans threw (plastic) bottles into the OHIO band once the game was decided.

In 2002 I again attended the OHIO/Marshall football game and found that a few of their fans were absolute jerks behind us cursing and wreaking of liquor. However, I will also say that a nice group of Marshall fans also denounced the actions of the fans who sat behind us and were quite pleasant.

In the Winter of 2002 I was involved in a moderate speed chase where Marshall fans chased myself and our friends through the streets of Huntington after OHIO defeated Marshall in men's basketball on ESPN that Saturday. While slightly provoked (we hung a Buffalo mascot on a noose out the window), being chased by another vehicle isn't really a safe way to tell us that we're jerks (and we were, but lame jerks at best).

I hate to say it, but my opinion of the Marshall fans I have dealt with and witnessed have been influenced by a bad few I am sure. But there seem to be a lot more jerks in Huntington than in Akron, Kent, Toledo, Oxford, Athens, etc. So, while I am not one to proclaim all Marshall fans as jerks I do think there is some reason behind all of the name calling. That having been said, I am always going to give any human being a chance before judging them and determining what i think of them. Marshall fan or not.

You are making too much sense WKU. Unfortunately, these threads often wind up with attacks on your university, your state, and even your home town.

Congratulations on your engineering degree. Many schools on this board try to degrade other institutions. Many of these schools have no engineering programs.

Don't take any of this too seriously, but stick around for some funny stuff.

And by all means, avoid the independent boards. These groups have been eating their own dog food too long. To mix metaphors, they believe their own bull******.

They actually believe that engineers, pharmacists, and lawyers work at McDonalds.

Enjoy your boats, lakes, and weather!

And now its time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin............... 03-lol
I dont post much here, but this thread kinda peaked my interest. SF I agree with what you've said, it did divide us from the MAC. We never fit in, or felt a common bond with anyone. I think thats a huge reason most of us, myself included, are looking to joining a southern based conference. The old southern conference was a blast.

That being said, the hillbilly jokes are pretty worthless, except for showing the lack of intelligence of those who spout them out. It doesn't really bother most of us, we've grown up hearing them. Western Kentucky fans may show a different reaction to them than mine, but I don't think they were the reason we were "driven off". The main reason I stay away from here is the constant bashing for other things, cheating, being given games, etc. Its okay to jab a few times, but day after day, year after year, the attacks just grew tiresome. I believe anyone, from any team, would grow tired of these attacks. Avoiding those would be my advice when dealing with any future program.

Hope this adds some perspective from our side.

I have been reading this board for over a year. I started lurking when I first heard that WKU might go to the MAC. With WKU in the MAC and Marshall out the average RPI rank (this year) would be 125. I like that a whole lot better than what the Sun Belt is doing. The Sun Belt average RPI rank (this year) with out WKU and with the three new teams that they are adding (Troy, ULM and FAU) is 177. I think that the Sun Belt will drop two spots in conference ranking (basketball) next year and I think that the MAC will jump ahead of CUSA. If the MAC takes SIU and WKU I think that the MAC will pass CUSA and the MVC in basketball. I would be happy with 8th place fighting for 7th place in conference standings. I am surprised that you do not have spell check. Engineers are not known for their spelling. :)

I never had a problem spelling the naughty words. Most of those only have four letters. I think even the hillbillys can spell MOST of the four letter naughty words.

Good.

Then you can take over proof reading duties. Let me know if you find any! :chair:

The easy way to avoid those attacks is to not cheat.

Seriously, when most Herd fans seemed perfectly okay with the cheating, then many of us are going to be perfectly okay with reminding you of it. If that bothers you then maybe going to the root of the problem, instead of being satisfied with scapegoating some poor slob who could only do what he was told, might be a good idea. Otherwise, learn to deal with what your program is, and what others think of it.

I have learned to deal with it, and that is by ignoring the attacks. Works fine for me.
We live on Barren River Lake. It is a nice lake, but I think the nicest lake is Dale Hollow Lake. Go to Dale Hollow Lake State Park, the view from the lodge is great. Now if you guys are going to get on me for my spelling, then I will give you a riddle to solve.

A farmer walked to town carrying a basket of apples. On his way the farmer met a man and gave that man 1/2 of his apples plus a 1/2 apple. The farmer continued to town and met another man. The farmer gave the second man 1/2 of his apples plus 1/2 an apple. The farmer continued on toward town and met a third man. To this third man the farmer gave 1/2 of his apples plus 1/2 an apple. At this point the farmer went home since he was out of apples. How many apples did the farmer have.

It is a straight math riddle.

Hint- The farmer only handed out whole apples. He did not cut any in half.

I was thinking that if WKU came into the MAC,depending on football schedules; I'd take in the Rockets at WKU and do a week on Kentucky Lake for a little fall fishing.WKU started me thinking about Beech Bend too! Alot more to do in Bowling Green,Ky. area than BG,Ohio.
