In a different thread over there there's a Tennessee newspaper article in which the MTSU Prez (or maybe the AD) has nice things to say about the MAC. Sure looks like they are positioning to be on the MAC's "radar".

Read it and weep. By the way, eventhough the title of the article says "MAC shows interest in Raiders", no where in the article does it mention that Mental TN State has been contacted or the MAC has actually shown interest. Plus the idiot who wrote this article states that WKU was a charter member of the SBC. That's a crock and isn't factual. WKU was NOT a charter member of the SBC.

MAC shows interest in Raiders, ’Toppers

The Mid-American Conference is exploring the possibility of expansion, and a pair of area schools could be on its radar.
The conference has made exploratory inquiries about Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, and there is a possibility that fellow Sun Belt Conference member Middle Tennessee State could be part of a package deal if or when expansion occurs.
The MAC Council of Presidents met in February and drew up plans to adopt a MAC Membership Standards Plan for all member schools to follow and to serve as guidelines for any expansion.
“Regarding expansion … the matter is certainly a high priority for the conference, and we expect discussions to move forward efficiently,

As for that article, is this just speculation on the writer's part? wishful thinking? or what?

Shrakkrocket, I'm just purely speculating, but I'm guessing MTSU wants to go where WKU goes because they know the rivalry is healthy for their programs--like the 11k plus sell out in basketball they had recently. I'm sure football would be the same. MTSU was a big rival in football back when we were both in the OVC together. And actually, MTSU is the only school who has a football series edge against WKU in the OVC. They have us by one win. It's something like 55-54. Of course, basketball is an entirely different subject! :D
So, I'm not sure if they are in a panic thinking WKU is headed for the MAC and they want to be where we are and are somewhat "begging" for the MAC's attention. Of course, WKU has not been offered anything, so the entire issue may be moot.

Speaking as a former Akron Zip, I remember when Western Kentucky came to play us during the 2001-02 season. They were ranked #25 in the USA Today polls and boasted one hell of a squad. This team looked somewhat professional and of course they had one of the prospects I had been VERY high on, Chris Marcus. I thought this team was in the MAC or Conference USA. I didn't know they were in the Sunbelt, as I later found out. I didn't know much about the Sunbelt, but I've heard of it, and it sounded like some major conference, or at least I thought it was. Anyways, in that game, Chris Marcus was injured and was sitting in street clothes, so I thought our team had a chance to win. Even without the 7'1 behemoth center, they were still too tough to compete with. I forgot who the other notable players were, but they were damn good. They dusted us and won the game by like 18. If their was any year that WKU fit in perfectly like a MAC or Conference USA team, it was that year.
But now, WKU doesn't resemble anything of what that team was. They look so completely different and nowhere near as dominant. WKU fans were in strong support of moving up to that conference. You guys were 21-6 this year in the Sunbelt. In the MAC? cut that in half. I hope you guys are aware, of what a typical weekly schedule is like in the MAC. From a time when I once confused Western Kentucky for Cincinatti..... they don't look much different than Lousiana Lafayette.
When I first learned about Middle Tennessee and saw they were in the Sunbelt, I was like, "oh, in that conference with Western Kentucky." I have never heard of Middle Tennessee, nor did I find the name and title of the college attractive. I think MTSU should scrap the idea of the MAC and should continue building on the foundation they currently have. MTSU should win a couple of SBC tournaments before they consider moving up. They're football team was horrendous and underachieved. If they moved up to the MAC, they wouldn't be 5-6, I'll tell ya that.
