updated through first day's action
Amazing how some years the upsets are more than others. Interesting that expanding the field has actually hurt mid-majors. Those At-large majors make it much more difficult to get to elite 8 and final four. Kent State's elite 8 run is much more impressive now that the Ohio elite 8 appearance when the field was 32 team back in the early 60's. Also, some of those teams that are majors today were mid-majors years ago. And some Majors then are mid-major today. The old Southwest confernce was a major conference along with the Metro Conference. The Big Eight wasn't even close to what it is right now. The A-10 had West Virginia and Penn State. Virginia Tech was in the Metro. Houston was a major power in the Southwest with Guy Lewis as coach. Now they are a C-USa midweight. Houston and Arkansas were the big two teams in the SWC. Texas and Texas Tech weren't much better than the MAC today. Independents like Depaul, Marquette, and Notre Dame were very powerfull. Now they are NIT regulars. UNLV was a power in the Big west. Now they haven't won a tourney game since 1991. Old Dominion once was offered a membership in the Big East, they turned it down thinking that the Colonial had a better future. The Big East wasn't a major Conference until late 70's early eighties. Uconn was a seller dweller for most of the early years in the Big East. St. John's the elite program of the big east. What a difference 25 years makes. The small field only took the conference winners back then. Today, the field has more mediocre Majors than conference champs. Adding small conferences to the list of automatic bids also has watered down the tourneyment. The Nit was the tourney for at-large teams. The Nit has the second place and third place teams from the major conferences back then. The conference tourney has replaced the regular season as the automatic bid.
I believe there were 24 teams in the tourney when OU made final four in the early 60's.

I'm pretty sure the only MAC team to ever make an NCAA final four would be Western Kentucky (if we add them). The Hilltoppers did it in 1971.

Ohio did make the Elite 8 in 1964. They beat Louisville 71-69 and Kentucky 85-69 before losing to Michigan 69-57.

Twenty-five teams were invited that year.
Duh. Of course. Elite 8. Too early to be posting.
They had to "play-in" to the round of 16, then won that game. Must have seeded 8 teams, then 16 teams played to get to play them.

That's roughly it, I think.

All past NCAA tournament brackets are listed in the Official 2005 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® Records Book starting on page 179:

(Note: That's a big .pdf file. If your computer is a weakling, beware).
