I don't think I root against Ohio A&M in this way. I'm not sure tOAMUs failures (or perhaps a near-miss in this case for IL) benefit BG or the MAC.

To be honest, I don't see how this helps NIU.

Nothing personal toward you guys, but for me I'm bitter enough w/o adding this sort of malice.
It probably doesn't do much for Huskie fans and I'm
sure it's not very healthy for the psyche.

But, besides the usual MAC - B10 arrogance/inferiority
syndrome, I prefer to look at this phenomenon as a
positive.

Some NIU fans are sick of students who jump on the
"Big School" bandwagon and are getting much more
upfront in their criticism of the perceived traitors. Their
hope (and mine) is that NIU (and the MAC) can get to
a Michigan or Florida situation where the school not
the University of Statename is a real rival.

A MSU or FSU fan would act very similar if UM - UF were
in the Illini's position.

Too ambitious? Many NIU students/alums are from
Daniel Burnham's city.
If it was MSU in the final, I'd mildly root for them. If it was Michigan, I'd actively root against them. A UM bandwagon-jumper is usually more obnoxious (and there are many more of them) than an MSU bandwagon-jumper.

It's the "Bundy Family"psychology-when others fail we feel much better about ourselves.
Maybe they're just Carolina fans. 03-lol

I used to have season tickets to The Big House. I got sick and tired of paying an arm and a leg to go the games and hear everyone complain when they didn't win by enough, or how they should fire the coach when they lost ONE GAME! I have to say I think MAC games are much more exciting.
In my case I am a Tar Heel fan (my dad's school, got raised on it)

But I think it comes a lot also from coming up in Illinois which is a place where division, line drawing and bitterness over sports is a standard feature (Cubs/Sox, Cubs/Cardinals, Bears/Packers). Its also a place unaccustomed to success- so when someone is successful their bandwagon is extra annoying which enflames people on the other side of the line even more.
I was born and raised in Detroit but have lived in Atlanta for quite some time. I pulled for North Carolina because of Roy Williams who I admire very much, and wanted to see him get that monkey off his back. The Illini did have a fine season though and I wish them good luck in the future.
