Ben Lueck has been granted a 6th year by the NCAA
Great. Now all we need is a QB choice and some DBs.
I think we might be OK at QB by the time that we reach MAC play.

I think it will be the lack of quality DBs that "get us". I am particularly concerned about the Michigan passing game. They always seem to have a 6 foot 5 or so talented receiver or two on their roster. It could get real ugly. Perhaps some of our freshman will step up big time and prove me wrong. I hope so.

I hope you guys don't have a problem with tall receivers:

David Washington (6-6, 225)
Nick Moore (6-4, 190 - Lance's brother)
Trumaine Smith (6-3, 180)

These three are all on our 2-deep roster at receiver. Then below are some incoming players that could make an impact this fall too:

Robin Bailey (6-5, 200)
Stephen Williams (6-4, 180)
David Nichols (6-3, 225) JC transfer that is expected to battle for starting spot this fall. He has been watching Spring practices but cannot participate because he didn't get enrolled in time for Spring Semester.

Tall WR's won't hurt us...Fast ones might.
Rocketfan, I asked some question on MAC board regarding your tall reciever, but was ignored due to your little cat fight between BG fans and Toledo fans.

1. Can they catch?
2. How do they react to getting hit?
3. When Bruce leaves, will there be anyone to get them the ball? Or will you be left with that guy who runs into the DLs?

Your young recievers are intersting prospects. Can they all run, or will one or two of these guys bulk up and become TEs?

Can your DBs cover an Indiana State Track Champion? Before you ask, yes, he can catch the ball. Not sure how he reacts to being hit, because no one has caught him yet.

Good questions. The tall one whose picture is on the MAC board has made some nice one-handed catches this spring. That is David Washington. I really think he could make a lot of noise this fall.

Nick Moore seems to have all the potential in the world. He is just a freshman, but coming out of high school his coach said he was just as talented if not more talented then his brother Lance Moore was. Nick seems like the kind of kid that can take a hit. Heck, you remember his brother?

Trumaine Smith is another freshman, but this kid could really be something. He is listed as one of the starters this Spring and is expected to start this fall. He is a speedster. Smith did a lot of reverses in high school because of his speed. He has really good size and as best as I can tell he can take a hit. It's a little hard to tell from Spring practices though, whether or not a guy can take a hard hit.

Bruce is a senior, but we have lots of talent behind him. Marquis Council is a sophomore this year and played decent in the MCB in the 2nd half and moved the team down the field. Unfortunately he made some inexperienced mistakes and threw 2 INT's. But that happens with guys that need to get experience. Council (6-3, 194) is also probably quicker than Bruce and he played point guard in high school, which shows his ability to control the game.

Clint Cochran (6-3, 200) has a pretty strong arm, but as a freshman he needs to get some experience and learn the offense a bit more.

John Goolsby (6-5, 207) could have been a steal. He has a very strong arm from what I have seen and great size. He is just a freshman and is still learning the offense this Spring.

This fall a kid named Brandon Summers will be in came as a true freshman. Summers (6-1, 185) is pretty fast and supposedly has a real strong arm. He was rated the #14 player, regardless of position, in the state of Michigan this past recruiting season. He had offers from Indiana, Michigan State, and Cincinnati before choosing Toledo.
It's amazing. You can actually get an answer when there's no BG/Toledo rivalry getting in the way of someone trying to talk football. 03-wink

I'm starting to think it might be a good thing that we don't have a rivalry.
A good thing not to have a rilvalry just so you can get answers to your questions?

We've got a few TE's already, and I don't expect any of these young receivers to move to the TE position.

Hard to say about an Indiana State track champion. Our DB's are fast, but don't know they are that fast. Of course your QB has to get the ball in his hands first, instead of thowing it into the DB's hands. :D

One of our DB's, Nigel Morris is a kick and punt returner for us too. He is a sophomore this year. In high school he broke the state of New York career record for interceptions. He had 3 or 4 as a freshman starting for us last year, and returned one 88 yards for a TD.

We have some young DB's coming in that are supposed to be fast. Here is what a coach said about one of them. "Chris has the quickest closing speed I have ever coached," Coach Dan Loria said." One of the other incoming guys is Lester Richmond from Morgan Park. He was a sprinter on the track team and ran a 24.33 200 meters. He had 115 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 3 fumble recoveries for Morgan Park last season. We have another DB coming in from Florida. I don't know what this translates too, but he ran a 11.02 in the 100 meters in high school as he was on the track team and cross country team. Then there is another DB from Florida that had 2 INT's for touchdowns and returned a punt for a touchdown last season in high school so I am sure he has good speed. He was also on the track team.

Sorry, forgot to turn on the sarcasm light to let you know I was joking.

Yeah. You guys got Melvin Rice, Jr. Here's the thing........you never know how these guys are going to play in college. Lance Moore got no serious I-A offers, except for Toledo. As a junior he led the nation with 103 receptions and he had like 90 again last season. Now he is looking at the NFL and at least getting a free agent offer. He said the Browns are really talking to him and giving him a long look. Just goes to show you that you never know how a prospect is going to work out, just basing what they did in high school and what others think in terms of his prospects as a recruit for college.

Of course Richmond is 6-2 and Melvin Rice, Jr is only 5-10. That 4 inch difference could make a big difference in college.

Like you said you never know how they are going to turn out...BUT...those 4 inches aren't going to be that big of a deal...at least when we are comparing a CB to a S.

How many ball control pass teams does the mac have? We have teams that beat you deep early and often. Or teams that will outrace you to the corner.

Absolutely right. Like all our numerous All-MAC performers who were once walk-ons.

Quote:Lance Moore got no serious I-A offers, except for Toledo.
You really set yourself up here, but until we beat you, I'll pass.

How so? I must be missing it. No one wanted Lance Moore coming out of high school. Amstutz saw the film on him and saw potential that everyone else passed up. After the way he played as a junior and senior, what I-A school wouldn't have wanted him if they could have just known how he would turn out.

When I say serious offer, I mean that I believe 1 or 2 schools offered him if he would convert to a DB but they didn't take his receiver capabilities seriously.
Lance Moore's a stud. He's going to be a good pro receiver because of his ability to catch tough passes in traffic. He tore us up. I couldn't stand him, but you have to respect him.

I thought Melvin Rice, Jr was a DB. Didn't know he was going to play safety for you. Normally though, isn't a safety normally taller and bigger than a DB?

If you are asking about Richmond, we have alot of young talent at safety and we recruited him to play DB.

For the purposes of this reenactment, I'll substitute the joke teller as a BG fan.

RocketFan: Lance Moore got no serious I-A offers, except for Toledo.
FalconFan: Toledo? I thought you said no serious I-A offers?

Cue rimshot and laugh track. Followed by a Toledo retort about tractors and hefty women.

So, you can see why I left the joke alone.
