The Lions take Mike Williams, another wide receiver?

Whoa, man!

Has Mouse Davis returned?
i dont undestand this pick AT AALLLLL

so now we have Charles Rodgers, Roy Williams, and Kevin Johnson at WR...

we have no blocking to protect Joey Harrington (or whoever is gonna QB)....

we have terrible cornerbacks...

WTF?! :chair:
I don't think they have confidence in Charles Rogers staying healthy.
They need to be starting Garcia. He knows how to run a real west coast offense (Im a Niners fan unfortunately). If Joey doesn't produce the first 2 or 3 games, yank his ******.
I expect the Lions will trade one of those receivers.

It's smart to go for value. That's what they did, I guess.

It's an excellent pick.

Kinda reminds me of my favorite college team. High octane offense, average front seven on D, weak secondary. Works in college, maybe it'll work in the NFL!

Or maybe they picked Williams because they DO have confidence in Rogers.
I love them picking Mike Williams. The offense they are going to be putting on the field is going to be awesome. There is going to be no way that anyone gets double teamed. And our cornerbacks arent all that bad. Dre Bly is top notch pro bowl caliber. Fernando Bryant isnt a slouch either. What they need to do now is to get a pass rusher to get pressure on the other teams qb and that will make the dbs even a little bit better. But for me that can wait for later in the draft. I am really hoping that Charlie Frye slips to them in the second round. Pick him and dump Joey.
No Bengals fans on here? I really like our pick today of David Pollack. We really need help on defense and Marvin is gonna stock up on smart and fast defensive guys. As Mort said right before our pick: We just need to get some guys for defense and we will be the sleeper team to "end the Patriots reign in the AFC" 04-rock :D 04-rock :D 04-rock

The Bengals will be runnin all over the Clowns this year.

I don't get the Harrington bashing, but I wouldn't mind seeing Detroit pick up McPherson or Frye. They only have 2 QB's right now, and both players would help depth much better than some washed-up never-was would.

The Browns got a very good player with their 1st pick, but could have gotten a better one (Williams), and sort of reached for their second pick.

I like Pittsburgh taking Miller, although I really (unrealistically) wanted him to fall to Detroit. He'll help Big Ben out a lot next season if he heals up well.

The Bungles are doing well. I really like what they're doing there, in fact, I really coveted their coach before Mooch was hired in Detroit.

The Lions got a very solid defensive player with Shaun Cody. So far they've used their picks for players that should never have even still been on the board for them. Matt Millen may be an A-1 @sshole, but the guy can draft better than most.

NEWSFLASH: Jets fans are idiots.

I don't know about that Oddball, but I think Detroit did well this year.

MWilliams is a stud, he should have been the #1 pick in the draft. It's understandable why Detroit went for him. They'll get their money's worth from him

The big question is, will they get value from their previous two first round picks? Obviously there are concerns about Rodgers, and that's disappointing. But, better to draft well then put your head in the sand and ignore a real problem (if Rodgers' health is a true problem.)

As for trades...that's tough. Johnson is a head case who nobody wants. Rodgers is a local guy, w/ questionable value due to his health. Trading R Williams is just looney.

But, Detroit had a solid draft, especially with what was available. While there are positions to improve, this team will be very good.

My assessment of the Lions' draft kind of went down as time went by. It just didn't have the exciting players late that the previous two years have had. Then again, this draft was predicted to be top-heavy and pretty weak in the middle, and it was. I know that you've never liked Rogers, Torch, but if he's just had a couple of fluke injuries, he'll end up being a great WR. Then again, maybe he's just one of those guys who are cursed by the injury bug. We'll see.

I do like that they grabbed Goddard late. All-in-all, they did well, but this group just doesn't seem close to last year's picks. I disagree with the pundits who are slamming them for picking WR's in the last three drafts. They were very weak there in recent years, and these were the best players available to the Lions. Now the Detroit WR corp has to be considered one of the strongest in the league, and they're all just kids. No complaints from me. I just hope that Harrington makes the leap into the league's elite this season.

Not so, Oddball.

I admit I was skeptical in his first year, but I think he proved himself in those first few games.

Exactly. I hope he stays healthy. I don't think the injuries are indicative of anything, but sometimes folks get a label and it sticks.

Fair enough. I only remember that you didn't like him prior to him being drafted. These days I tend to forget a lot of details. :D
I think the Lions had a pretty good draft. They didn't get the high caliber offensive lineman they needed, but they did upgrade the two positions that injuries have really hurt the last two years.

1. WR - Williams has showed that he is a stud. Now the Lions can dump worthless glass hands Az Hakim. They will also have a back up plan if Rogers gets injured again.

2. CB - Stanley Wilson will help on nickle situations with the pass happy Vikes and Pack. He will also be insurance if Bryant or Bly get hit with injuries.

I also thought Cody was a steal at 37, Swancutt was a great pickup in the 6th round as well as Jonathon Goddard.

The only pick I didn't like was Orlovsky. If I was going to trade up to get a QB, I would have done so for Frye or Lefors or even Orton. I might have even waited to take a risk on McPherson.
Lions message board says that WMU punter Adam Anderson was signed on to Detroit today.
Williams to Detroit is a great pick. If Rogers stays healthy, Harrington can practically just throw up the ball for any of the 3 to catch it.

of course, if he gets hit first and fumbles the ball...it won't matter much.
