I nearly fell off the couch today. I was reading tomorrows sunday sun times and I turned the page to find a full 2 page picture of the new endzone facility for NIU. The only text was a small corner caption saying that it was announced at todays spring game. I couldn't believe the paper mentioned it, let alone did a full 2 page pic of the rendering. I might need to subscribe to the paper for that one.
this is awesome!!! im gonna have to pick one up.

Sounds like Jim Phillips and gang did this thing right.
this may be a stupid question, but is there any mention in the trib? obviously phillips was going around promoting this to papers, so i was curious if maybe they ran something too (i know, wishful thinking).
Glad to see the Huskies are getting coverage they deserve!!!
Article in Tribune about the Spring game, and it mentions the new complex as well. Said that once funding is secure, it will take 12 months or so to complete. For some reason, both Chicago papers have always covered news about facility improvements. I recall reading articles about the Convo Center and the East side grandstands in the Chicago Tribune. Now if they would just spend some time covering the games.
Here's the Sun-Times article. The paper had the picture of the facility with the story.

DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois unveiled two surprise receivers in its spring football game after first revealing the much-anticipated plans for its $9.5 million, state-of-the-art training complex.

Junior Jarret Carter, who played his way into a starting job in spring practice, caught four passes for 102 yards and a touchdown Saturday, and "grayshirt'' freshman Greg Turner of Driscoll High School had four receptions for 81 yards and two scores as the offense scored 34 points against the defense.

"If we had surprises in camp, those two were it,'' coach Joe Novak said. "We'd been waiting for Jarret to step up, and Greg reminds me of P.J. Fleck a couple of years ago. He's not as fast as P.J., but he's bigger and stronger.

"This is a kid who scored touchdowns in almost every game in high school and was a top scorer in basketball. He didn't practice with us last fall, thus the term 'grayshirt,' but he certainly showed us a lot in the spring.''

Carter and Turner will join Shatone Powers, Sam Hurd and Marcus Perez as targets for quarterback hopefuls Phil Horvath, Zach Ullrich, Britt Davis and Dan Nicholson.

"I felt I was overlooked a little by Division I schools, but coach Novak and his staff stuck with me,'' Turner said.

Horvath holds an edge in the battle to replace graduated quarterback Josh Haldi.

"The defense promised us some hits today, and they delivered,'' Horvath said. "Ben West got me from the left-hand side the first play of the game.

"Having so many receivers this year is certainly going to open things up for us. Seeing plans for the new training center made the whole day pretty exciting.''

NIU hopes to complete the new Academic and Athletic Performance Center by 2007. Plans and an artist's sketch were revealed for the 60,000-square-foot training and study complex in the north end zone of Huskie Stadium. It will benefit 426 student-athletes in 17 programs.

"The next-best day will be when we reach our financial goal and put the first shovel in the ground,'' Novak said.

The financial push was boosted by contributions of more than $100,000 each from former Huskies Justin McCareins, a wide receiver with the New York Jets, and Ryan Diem, a guard for the Indianapolis Colts.

The building will contain locker rooms, coaches' offices, conference and film rooms, a weight-training facility and study cubicles.
