Spring's Top 10

Luke Winn, SI.com

For players whose names have appeared in the top five of a Heisman vote count -- and especially for those who happen to already own a trophy -- the 2005 edition of spring football was largely a spectator sport.

Last year's frontrunners, USC's Matt Leinart and Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson, spent the spring recovering from offseason surgeries while second-, third- and fourth-stringers battled for supremacy among the backups. So while we've gleaned little new information about the lead dogs, we do know this: the '05 Heisman race, save for Jason White, could look a lot like '04's. To fill the void until fall, here's an early top 10:

5. Omar Jacobs, Jr., QB, Bowling Green

2004 Stats: 309-of-462 passing (66.9 percent), 4,002 yards, 41 TDs, 4 INTs,

Prognosis: The man was robbed! How else to explain the lack of Heisman attention surrounding Jacobs' 41-TDs-against-just-four-INTs showing in '04? (Ed. Note: "Three losses" and "Plays in MAC" are also acceptable answers.) Jacobs is still far from a household name, but he'll begin 2005 on the radar as the top non-BCS-conference candidate. That should help.

In the springtime: Notice the "increased-participation" trend as we make our way down this list? Jacobs tore up the Falcons' spring game on April 16, completing 24 of 38 passes for 441 yards and a sextet of TDs. Nevermind that BGSU lost a trio of receivers to graduation -- freshman wideouts Corey Partridge and Luke Alexander combined for five TDs in the scrimmage. Jacobs' message to the younguns', as told to the Toledo Blade: "Just get open, and I'll find you."
SI = kiss of death
Omar will be a great college QB but won't cut it in the pros.

Interesting - they say nothing about how Jacobs padded his stats against the horrendous BG D in that game. 03-razz

SI talked about Gradkowski as a Heisman hopeful before last season started too. Not that Gradkowski didn't play good, but he did play very good.......but he wasn't even close to the Heisman.

Couldn't even get all-MAC honorable mention. :D

(In other words, I think Frye and Jacobs had something to do with that.)

Be nice to RF, He's cool.

Like I have said before, he has two MAC Championship rings (2001 while he redshirted and 2004). Frye and Jacobs have zero.

Gradkowski will gladly take those rings while Jacobs worries about his personal stats and the wind in BG messing up his hair. 03-wink

That's fine with me. IF Omar doesn't make the NFL, so be it. He will still have a degree.

I care how he does at the collegiate level, at this moment.

I disagree. While Omar will probably never wear a MACC ring, he will be a fine NFL QB.

RF spends too much time in chain restaurants.

That may go away when his kids are growed.

OMAR?? Great player, but NFL arm.????

His throwing motion is really wierd, he is not a classic thrower. The superpowers backed off him as a QB because of his mechanics.

Think about his throwing motion and compare to recent MAC NFL QB's , ROTH, Frey, Leftwich and Pennington his release is really different.

Mechanics can be and usually are fixed in the NFL. He has the right size for the NFL and is the proto-type NFL QB. He will play in the NFL and probably be very good.
The big schools didn't back off Omar because of his throwing motion. They backed off because another good high school kid in the same county committed to East Carolina, and the big schools thought it was him. It is kind of wierd, but that's what happened. Aslo, injuries during high school didn't help his cause.

I think Omar will make a good NFL QB. I see him going the same route Leftwich went, work behind a QB for a year or two then begin starting.

Look at Bernie Kosars throwing motion. It definitely wasn't prototypic, but he certainly had a decent NFL career. Omar has a much better chance in the NFL than Brian McClure did.

Care to back that up with some facts?

He had basically committed to Kansas State then they made a coaching change and he got lost in the shuffle and they signed Ell Roberson instead.

Philip Rivers was drafted fairly high with nearly the same type of throwing motion. Also, Omar can throw the ball 50 to 60+ yards so I would not be too concerned with his arm strength. Besides, his throwing motion lends to an incredibly quick release which leads to him almost never being sacked.
I agree that Omar has an unusual throwing motion.

More MAC quarterbacks ought to try it.

I agree with FF hear. If I were a BG fan, I would be most interested in how well he plays for BG while still hoping he does well in the NFL. If he doesn't do well in the NFL, what matters? He will still be able to get a job somewhere, though he'd probably want to shave the mullet off before going to interviews.

I also agree with Oddball. Unless last year was a total fluke, I expect him to be a good, if not great NFL quarterback.
