Woohoo!, did anyone have a big draft party for this? Anyway, Akron, Toledo and EMU (2 guys) were taken. If anyone cares, the CFL has a limit on foreign (USA) players so really they take the best of the Canadian players in the draft and then fill out the rest of their rosters with free agent Americans.

Wasn't NAFTA supposed to fix that?

No.

In fact, that rule ruined the CFL's expansion into the United States. Some federal agency (Department of Labor, I would be) ruled that the CFL's quota on non-Canadian players was absolutely illegal.

So American teams -- in particular, the nameless* Baltimore team that actually won a CFL title -- began whippin' on those poor Canucks.

Soon, the American teams were folded, and the CFL went back to its eight- or nine-team, Vancouver-to-Montreal set up.

* The NFL had sued the Baltimore team for using the nickname "Stallions." They said it was too obvious a reference to "Colts," which was an NFL trademark.
That's exactly what I'm talkin' about. If those protectionist bastages in Le Grand Minnesota du Nord had ended the silly quota, they could have beaten the Horse With No Name on the field.

IIRC, the CFL drew quite well in Baltimore (and maybe Birmingham) but didn't make much of a dent elsewhere in the States.
How long do you get the keep the rights to a player when you draft them. Their Personel Director calls drafting Kaczur a gamble. The guy was an NFL 3rd round pick. I would think the Pats aren't going to give up on him immediately. Do they at least retain first right to sign him down the road?
I believe they hold the rights for 1 year.

What he likely meant by gamble is Kaczur will make it in the NFL and not be available to play in the CFL.

Nope. The CFL team retains the player's rights until he joins the CFL.

Also, the draft involved just Canadians. All NCAA kids that were drafted were Canadians, including the two EMU kids.

Yeah, I got that. That's what suprised me. I was trying to be sarcastic, but evidently missed the mark. I thought his use of the word Gamble was funny considering it's a huge gamble with him being a third round pick with a heck of an opportunity to have a long NFL career.
I'll say this: I was in Montreal this weekend, and there are LEGIONS of hot women in that city. Just amazing.

Okay, back to CFL Draft talk.

Actually the NFL threatened to sue when the Baltimore team was gonna use the name Colts. So the team in turn decided to use the term CFL Colts and the NFL forged ahead with their lawsuit. When it was obvious that they would still continue the lawsuit with the addition of CFL they dropped their nickname and were referred to as the Baltimore CFL'ers or no names. The next year they went with Stallions and deflected any problems with the NFL

Thanks for the correction.

They can draft a very select number of Americans though if they want to. Last year one of the teams drafted Maurice Clarrett.

For some reason I was thinking there was a limit on the rights, because when one of the teams drafted Clarrett they said it was worth it because they didn't think the NFL would do a supplemental draft and let him in and that team would hold his rights until he was eligible for the CFL draft again, which I thought was either 1 year or 2 years later. Maybe I was just reading CFN which is usually wrong.
American players aren't drafted they are put a team's negotiation list. When a team puts a player on the list no other team can negotiate with said player. I believe there is a set number of players that can be put on the list not sure what this number is.
