We still don't know if Temple is joining for the 2005 season and if initially it's only for football or involves membership or an agreement about basketball and other sports.

On a related note, a Hartford newspaper carried an interview with Big East Commissioner Tranghese where he says they have no immediate interest in adding a 9th member.

An issue concerning Temple's membership is: When they join, there will be an imbalance in divisional membership, 6 vs 7, and this does not conform to an NCAA rule. The rule requires that balanced divisional membership is required in order to have a conference championship game in football.

I'm thinking the MAC could request a waiver of this rule until they add a 14th member or drop a present member. It surely looks, doesn't it, like adding a 14th member is what will happen?

So, the next question is who will the 14th member be? We know that earlier talk was about inviting Western Kentucky. I read somewhere, though, that maybe this possibility had cooled down a bit, primarily because of WKU currently not being Div 1A in football.

Are there some surprise possibilities out there or will WKU be invited?
Wouldn't it be great if the MAC got Army to join for football-only?
unbalanced div, crossover games do not count for div championship. MAC had same situation before UCF. I hope TU ends up in for allsports & for the long run. Ill St has good BB program, draws well, FB program can rival NO Ill & 50th TV market.
I hope the constant negativity towards Temple that's been posted on this board stops. I know it won't, but it really adds nothing
I'm guessing but could Temple be an associate member who will not play for the MACC but could (longshot) get a bowl bid if they do very, very well and the MAC has a bowl bid for them.

THEN, Temple and another school could be offered full membership.

Is associate membership far fetched?

Maybe, but wasn't there talk of it for Navy with C-USA? Nothing more than a scheduling/bowl game alliance.
I've never been very excited about the idea of adding Temple to the MAC but I believe in Mr. Chryst's leadership. I'm assuming he will reveal his reasoning when the decision is made public.

Despite my armchair quarterbacking, I'd like to welcome Temple to the conference. Here's to the membership being mutually beneficial.

Constant negativity? More like realism. The main debate has been over whether Temple should be added if they only want to bring football. That is a legitimate debate, and necessitates discussion of how good they are in football. If a realistic assessment of that brings a negative conclusion, then so be it.

Temple may very well be a "dun deal," but I believe that the presidents stll have to vote to make it official. Other news outlets have already had similar reports, but with no official comment from the MAC. Considering that, and the factual  nature of the rest of the original post, I think this is still something that is in the works. Chryst may be using the press to pressure the presidents, or he may just be misquoted in these articles. We just don't know yet.
MAC fans,

Prepare for the barrage of jokes about to be heaved our way from fans of BCS conference teams. Considering that this is a football only deal, I have just added the MAC to my list of items to joke about with my buddies, myself. "It's all fun and games until someone adds UCF or Temple to their conference for football only."

Who said Temple will join for football only? I didn't see that.

I think the MAC is going to end up with a nice TV BB package.UT will gain greater national exposure and allow us to recruit/sign more East Coast athletes. It will also help bring out of state students to UT helping enrollment.

I didn't see that...in this article, anyway. I have seen it in almost every other article posted though. If they do add Temple for all sports, then I am definitely for it but otherwise, I'm not. All signs so far have pointed to football only.

Anyway, look at it this way: UCF for football only was a sham. Marshall was great for the MAC in terms of recognition, on the football side of things. Imagine if the MAC had added Marshall for basketball only and let CUSA take Marshall for football. IMO, that deal would also have been a sham. I don't like it.

Why add someone that views themselves to be above the MAC in other sports? To put this into perspective, you wouldn't marry a woman who says she'll marry you on these terms...you get the bad schit and your wealthy or good looking buddies get all of the good stuff, would you?
Again--who's next?

Looks to me like pulling big surprises is not our Commissioner's style. And remember, we do know that Western Kentucky was asked to provide information to support the possibility for joining.

So, I'm guessing Western Kentucky.

If this is true, then it makes it even more likely, I think, that Temple will join for basketball also, if not now, then within a few years. A large part of the rationale for inviting Temple and WKU would be to improve the MAC in basketball. And there is the hope that football will be improved in the future as well.
Since Mid Tenn is involved, why not them joining the MAC?
There are already enough "Bottom 10" football programs in the MAC, adding another team just for the sake of having balanced divisions is not the answer. I think the MAC needs to look at eliminating one member. Take a look at this team's record over the last 20 years:

1985 4-7
1986 6-5
1987 3-8
1988 4-7
1989 1-10
1990 7-4
1991 2-9
1992-1-10
1993 1-10
1994 2-9
1995 1-10
1996 1-10
1997 3-8
1998 2-9
1999 2-9
2000 4-7
2001 4-7
2002 4-8
2003 1-11
2004 2-9

Only 2 winning seasons in the last 20 years!?

Buh bye Temple!!
WKU is prepared to step up and go I-A. If WKU joined the MAC, football would go too, at I-A.

I can't read the minds of the MAC presidents, but if they are willing to invite Temple, I would say WKU is close behind.

But is Temple prepared to "step up" to I-A 03-lol

neither does Temple, which is the cause for the negativity

I'm kinda anxious to see WKU in the MAC if it's true. Think they'll be middle of the pack in football to start up but have potential to be a contender when the dust settles and jump right in to the fold in basketball. Sorry though WTJ, I added WKU to my season in NCAA football 2004 and pasted them 77-0.

20 years worth of reasons to just say <span style='font-size:30pt;line-height:100%'>NO</span> to Temple. 05-nono
