Assuming that while we are talking about TU that the WKU AD is planning their move to I-A FB. (And our board administrator is getting a WKU icon ready "just in case...")

I remember when Marshall was moving up from I-AA to I-A MAC.

They made an "art form" taking I-A transfers who didn't have to sit out a year as they transferred to a I-AA program a year or two before Marshall became I-A.

I believe the best knowns were Eric Kresser (sp?) the QB from FL (I think). I also believe Randy Moss came to Marshall without having to sit out a transfer year.

I remember from a Herd board they gave the name "blue shirting" to this process.

UB never did this and they had trouble getting the talent level up a few notches to I-A MAC level.

P.S. I think there is now another meaning to "blue shirting" - a kid walking on in January and then given a scholarship later (I forget the exact details). I think the jest is that he gets spring ball and gets a schollie if a kid drops say during summer and a schollie opens up.
I don't think Marshall made it an "art form". First of all, Kresser only played one year and that was when they were still !-AA. They only two !-A transfers on their team when they joined the MAC.

That sounds a lot like grayshirting whereby a kid enrolls with the intent of picking up a scholarship as soon as a gap for a scholly opens up in the program.

I would like you to know that the greatest coach in the MAC King Frank Solich got an Ohio State grayshirt to accept a grayshirt instead at OHIO.

The future is cat.
Flat Tire:

Are you sure?

I do remember that Kresser played the one season BEFORE the Herd joined the MAC. Agree that Kresser never played in the MAC.

But, I thought the Herd got Randy Moss and say 3 or 4 more transfers did.

I remember a bit whether or not Marshall could take a I-A transfer the spring before joining the MAC say July 1.
Many IAA programs pick up IA transfers, even w/o the carrot of moving back up to IA.

Check out Delaware's roster, it's filled w/ transfers from IA programs. And they are very successful.

you work for CFN, don't you? Until he does something here, Solich is just another new coach in the MAC.
Yes I think I am correct. Only Moss and Long, a transfer from WVU, were the only 1-A players on the team that joined that the MAC. Of course, you must realize that Moss never play in a 1-A game.
Also, Marshall had a couple of players that transfer up to BSC 1-A teams. Another couple of players that saw no playing time at Marshall ended at Ohio; Kent; Akron and one of the Michigan schools and had nice careers. At that time, you could transfer up or down and not sit out a year.

Chad Pennington played as a freshman in 1995. He redshirted in '96 and Kresser played. Pennington than played for Marshall in '97, '98, and '99.

Randy Moss played for Marshall in 1997, and Marshall was in the MAC and I-A. He left for the NFL after that season.
