MIAMI -- Florida International's 3-year-old football program was placed on three years probation by the NCAA on Monday after an internal investigation revealed an assistant coach committed offseason football workout violations.

The unidentified assistant coach -- fired by the school -- supervised and conducted offseason practice, illegal under NCAA rules. The sanctions don't include any loss of scholarships or reductions in postseason play or television appearances.

"It is my sense that the NCAA's decision was to give us one year of probation for each of the seasons in which a violation occurred," FIU athletic director Rick Mello said. "We are relieved to have all of this behind us and that no student-athletes will be negatively impacted."

The violations will also not affect FIU's plans to move into Division I-A, Mello said. The Golden Panthers are in the second year of a transition period into college football's upper echelon and will join the Sun Belt Conference in football this fall.
So a school is in the transition period for moving up to I-A, commits NCAA violations in each of three seasons, and only gets 3 years probation with no loss of scholarships, bowl opportunities, or television opportunities. And this also doesn't effect their move from I-AA to I-A at all.

Is the NCAA getting very laid back about schools committing violations or what?
FIU self-imposed harsher penalties than the NCAA hit Arkansas with for the same violation back in the Crowe-Ford era.

That's the new NCAA system. If the school jumps out ahead of the NCAA does some decent penalties they'll leave you alone.

That might explain FIU, but what about Ohio State? They only found 1 football violation??????? Come on!

Uh, they have the resources to cover their trail better? 03-wink

Exactly!

Kind of reminds me when the "Fab 5" were playing in A2. I saw Juwon Howard driving around in a $35,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and once stood in line at a bank branch of the National Bank of Detroit (NBD) in A2 with Jalen Rose depositing 27 $100 bills into his account.

Same stuff happens in Columbus. Drive by a football or basketball practice sometime and see what vehicles are in the student-athlete parking lot.

Yeah, like money in the investigators pocket to say nothing was found. Despite all the allegations by Maurice Clarett, the NCAA didn't even interview him about them. Sure, they could all be bogus allegations, but if you don't even interview him that is pretty sloppy work.....IMO.
How did in 1986 Temple win over half their games but end up in the books as 0-11 ? Sure doesn't sound like a clean program to me. At least they were competitive though. Found it interestimg they were in the MAC ( Mid Atlantic Conf) in the 60's though.

Rest assured Temple will do all they have to compete in the MAC including joing Marshalls tactics, which they actually do but it doesn't matter.
