I'm predicting that Toledo's defense will be worse next year.

After all, they do have a new defensive coordinator.

I haven't seen one, credible reason given why their defense might be better.
They did only lose three starters from defense, which would mean that eight starters are returning with a year of expierence playing together under their belts.

Is that reason not credible enough in your book?
First--No, since their defense at the end of the season was not good. They gave up lots of points.

Second--Depends on who those three players they lost were and who their replacements are.
Haven't you heard about the coach who was talking about this year's prospects for his team, which didn't play any defense last year? He said that the good news was, he had a lot of returning players. The bad news was, he had a lot of returning players.

Which pretty much says how easy it is to predict a team's fortunes, regardless of how many players are returning.
I'm more concerned with Wisky's D and how we can beat them at this time.

One game at a time.
First off, NIU only scored 17 points against Toledo's bad defense from last year. You have no room to talk about our defense being bad if you couldn't exploit it.

We lost FS Patrick Body, DE Phil Alexander, and Whip Michael Broussard. No backups were lost either. Over 70% of UT's defense last year were playing college football for the first time in their careers. That kind of defense is going to be young and not very good. When was the last time you saw any school play that many freshman on defense and have a good defense?

Also, our DC was not very good and everyone knew it. We went from having the best defense in the MAC and one of the best in the nation in 2000, to slowly sliding downward every year with West as the DC. His first year we were like 3rd or 4th in the MAC, and it just got worse.

Our new DC has improved the defense at every school he has gone to. Not just one or two schools, but every school. EMU's defense improved like 40 places in total defense in Rose's first year there. If you can improve EMU's defense like that, imagine what you can do with Toledo's defense.

The last couple of years we were very thin on the DL, which made things worse as we hardly ever blitzed and did not get any pressure on the opposing QB. We have a much thicker DL now, probably one of the biggest in the MAC. They might not be as talented as the DL's at Miami, but they can plug some holes and can do just what Rose wants from them. He also isn't afraid to blitz. He is also changing our defensive package from what West used.

These are all reasons that point to Toledo having a better defense this fall. How much better is anyone's guess, but it will be better. And the best part of it is that there are only 2 or 3 seniors on that defense again this year. You will see an improvement this fall. Then in 2006 you will really see an improvement.

My, aren't we jumpy. Especially considering he was telling a joke.

Actually, I was referring to SanteFe's post, thinking for some reason it said SanteFeHuskie as the screen name. I guess I looked to quickly and should have known that SFF was behind this. So for any NIU reference I apologize. I didn't even read the NIU fans post before typing in my reply to SFF.

Thanks for clearing it up for me. :)

Good, keep thinking that way. We'll just make a believer out of you on November 22nd.

Is Santa Fe some kind of Sales Rep for Vandelay?

You'd think so with his provocative, yet obvious posts.

Look, you want more traffic, post some nudies!

In the meantime, STFU!

Amen Brother!! These constant thread start pads are getting a little ridiculous.

Dude, we did score 41 points ya' know and could have had more without Omar's two overthrows on sure TD passes. 04-drinky

You will get your collective asses handed to you on November 22nd. Mainly because Amstutz will leave all the stars at home with made up injuries because you will already have the West wrapped up with your cherry schedule and the usual lay down by the puppies. Unless of you course you lay another egg at Ball State 03-lol

Hey! Leave our lay downs out of this! Besides, we were just rolling over for Toledo so BG wouldn't take the division! :)

Yeah, but we made adjustments at halftime and you only scored 14 2nd half points and they were all in the final 5 minutes. Giving up 42 points to BG really isn't that bad either. BG scored more than 42 points in most of their games.

It's a shame you can't talk smack to us "puppies" with your own team.
This is a foolish thread.

"I haven't seen one, credible reason given why their defense might be better."

Here's one - Lou West left the program for Indiana State. Great for us, terrible for them. Tim Rose has turned around defenses everywhere he has been, including EMU two years ago.

I officiated one of their spring scrimmages in early April, this 3-4 defense is much better suited for the Rockets since they lack very many DTs. Their DBs finally looked like they know what they were doing. Lou West had them playing 10-20 yards off of the receivers. No more of that thank goodness.

I don't think UT's defense will be statisically in the MAC's top-5, but certainly better than last year. Also, the Rocket's schedule is so much easier so on that note alone their stats will be better.

Again...be thankful you don't have to travel to the Doyt this year.

You said we did not exploit it...scoring 40 points on any D-1 defense is exploiting it 04-drinky

A full 360 degrees, if given enough time. There's a reason the word censor on MHT renders his name as "He Who Must Not be Named."
Maybe Toledo's defense will be better by replacing their defensive coordinator.

It's just that reasoning that way seems weird.

And what does it show about the head coach and the rest of the coaching staff to keep on a defensive coordinator for X number of years who makes your team worse than it could be?

And like DevilGrad says, long term Miami fans where Toledo's new "super" defensive coordinator coached for several years don't seem to think all that much of him.

Of all the Toledo fans posts I've seen on this matter, rocketfootball's at least discussed some detailed specifics for arguing his view.
