During the last three years, in a comparison of nine significant awards, Ohio University ranks first among Ohio's public and private colleges and universities with 36 winners of nationally competitive awards in these competitions, according to an OU news release.

Among the 13 Mid-American Conference schools, OU is first during that same three-year period by a wide margin. In a comparison with its 10 selected peer institutions, OU ranks second, trailing only the University of North Carolina, which has 42 winners, the release said.

The nine awards used for the comparison include the Boren/NSEP Undergraduate Scholarship, Fulbright, Goldwater, Madison, Marshall, Mellon, Rhodes, Truman and Udall Scholarships.

We will be more diverse this fall," he said.

According to Provost Kathy Krendl, the class of 2004 had about 3,900 students of which about 6.2 percent were minorities, or about 240 students. The class of 2005 has about 4,300 students of which about 8.2 percent are minorities, or about 350 students.

"That 2 percent increase is the result of hard work," Krendl told the OU Board of Trustees Friday morning.

McDavis said in 2006, he plans to introduce another new scholarship program; this one will be aimed at Appalachian, southeast Ohio students using the Urban Scholars Program as a model.

Celebrating diversity for diversity's sake is meaningless. Diversity is a term used by weak and lazy people who don't want to strive for what is important: excellence.

If you find an institution that strives for excellence, you'll have diversity.
And your football team still stinks.

You forgot about OU being #1 in most annoying posters. Not even North Carolina could beat them there.

Are we talking quantity or quality of annoyance? Carolina may not have one single Kit-Cat, but they've got hordes of annoying fans.

And don't rule out the Buckeyes. As a guy who moderates a Miami board, I'm beginning to get daily reminders of why I left the state for good at the end of the Eighties.

Yeah, I was talking quality. If you want to talk quantity, Notre Dame has to be up there. Man did those "Return to Glory" shirts disappear fast after Willingham's first year.
Blah,

You have the best avatar ever. 04-rock :D

We have more radio coverage for our Physics department than you have for your basketball team.

Sounds like an idea taught at Bob Jones University.....

OU is a public school in Ohio. The demographic of the 4 year college bound population has to be 90% if not more white. OU could be the most selective and highly regarded school in the state, yet still fail to make itself diverse......like Miami.

There is no way in god's green earth that OU is going to be able to improve its diversity numbers naturally without a focused effort to bring more of those students down to Athens.

Diversity is important in of itself because it exposes students to different cultures.......building personal skills they will need when they graduate to work in a more diverse environment. The diversity is so low at OU right now that minorities are generally defensive. Increasing diversity would make the multicultural students more comfortable, and harder for the white people to ignore contact with.

I can't believe some of the statements I hear regarding race issues out of the mouths of some of our students and alumni. OU is a good school filled with backward people. All that school prepares you for culturally is how to throw a barbecue with enough beer at your home in the suburbs.

Kit-Cat, you have failed to recognize International Week that OU puts on each year in May. As a "global" person who supports international events such as this, I believe you should give OU credit for its attempt to enlighten people in the community about international cultures and to celebrate diversity.

For those not familiar with International Week, please click on the following link:

OU is very diverse. In fact, the longer you stay there, da verse it gets.....

(I saw that joke in "Dilbert" once.)
