Although it has not been officially finalized, it appears that the Gator Bowl Contracts for the years 2007-2011 will change.

The Present Contract--The Gator Bowl will feature an ACC team vs either a Big East team or Notre Dame

The 2007-2011 Contract--The Gator Bowl will feature an ACC team every year. The opponent will be a Big 12 team for 2 of the 4 years or a Big East team for 2 of the 4 years, or Notre Dame could substitue for a Big East team 1 of these 2 years.

I think I have this correct.

What this means for the Big East is that instead of participating each year in the Gator Bowl, it will at most appear 2 out of the 4 year contract and maybe only once if Notre Dame is chosen.

Now, I believe that during the 2 years the Big East doesn't play in the Gator Bowl it will play in the Champ Sports Bowl. Getting complicated, eh?

Many of the other non BCS Bowls have been anxiously waiting to see what the Gator Bowl does before they consider changes. Now that the Gator Bowl appears to have decided, we may have a flood of other Bowl news coming very soon.

I'm betting that this kind of multiple conference deal will be the wave of the future. The Bowls will seek as much flexibility as possible and will attempt to work together to make the best possible matchups for each Bowl.

How might this affect the MAC?

For starters, I think it gives momentum to the MAC and the Big East looking to start a new Bowl Game, e.g. the Toronto Bowl. The Big East has lost part of its deal with the Gator Bowl and needs to seek some new opportunities.

Also, I think the MAC will sign secondary contracts with some of the Bowls so that a MAC team might be selected if the primary conference contracts don't work out.

An example of a Bowl that the MAC might sign a secondary contract with could be the Independence Bowl.

I believe that these flexible Bowl contracts would increase the possibility that the MAC might have at least a third team play in a Bowl Game each year (or a fourth MAC team if the MAC and the Big East start a new Bowl), especially if the MAC has 3-4 teams with strong records.

What does all this mean for the Motor City Bowl? I wouldn't hazard a guess. It's beginning to look less likely, though, that the MAC might play a Big Ten team that finishes higher than 7th. I'm betting also that the secondary contract with the Big East will stay in place.

If the MAC does sign some secondary contracts with other Bowls, what Bowls do you think are most likely?
It would be sweet to have a shot at the Liberty once every 4 years.

Hmm, how about having no exclusive deals with anyone but conference champs, and waiting until a certain week of the season before offering invitations to teams that have confirmed eligibility.

I would definitely like to see that. These damn conference tie-ins with 7th place SEC, Big 12, or Big 10 teams going to bowls is plain ridiculous.
