Let's see how the masses feel about Billy B.
That's why I go to almost every game, home and away. The last game I missed was the Buffalo game and I listened to the game on the computer from the UB feed. Just finalized the reservations for the Cleveland (UA/KSU games).
The Baker/Simmons duo isn't all that bad. They could be a lot worse.

I'd rather have mediocre guys with tons of Huskie spirit than the best announcers that could care less obout NIU.

It doesn't take a lot to be passionate about your subject. It does take something to actually be an effective radio broadcastor.

I didn't see "God awful" on the poll.
Football -- mediocre!

Basketball -- poor!

Here's the way I rate announcers: If I listen to them and can pretty well visualize the action, they are doing a good job. Especially in basketball, Baker does a poor job of describing the action. Examples -- type of defenses being used, how the offense attacks the defense and general overall tempo and strategy.

Enjoy your vacation. Cleveland is a fine city to visit, but I would have made reservations for a warmer month. Columbus in September may serve you better. 03-razz

Exactly, Bob. TV announcers can do a lot differently than radio announcers, who need to paint a picture for the listeners.
Basketball - poor,

Who else knows exactly when a "Tri-lighter" has been scored!
My biggest gripe has always been that he doesn't give the score of the game often enough. Especially when coming back from a commercial break. It is a cardinal rule that you give the score both leaving for commercials and when returning.
I think Bill Baker does a decent Job. When the teams were not good, it is tough to make the game sound exciting but he did. Also, I don't see big names wanting to come to NIU for play by play or color.

Hub Arkush is unemployed from radio. There is your color analyst.

At one point they were given either an egg-timer so they would have a reminder to give the score.
Nearly 45 responded to the poll and Baker did better than I mite have expected considering all the carping by a minority of the respondents.

Ain't democracy great and especially sweet when the vote goes your way !
BTW: Book it.

Mark, Sid and Bill will be your broadcasters on SCORE.

Whenever NIU games conflict with other broadcasts having priority, Huskie games will be aired on WCKG FM.

Announcement coming Thursday.

Too bad Scott "Lowenbrau" is not around to relish in the break thru.

All hail to Phillips. One more obstacle has been overcome.

Too bad he didn't leave sooner.
...and the reason being..?...

besdies being an arse to me on multiple occassions, a couple of his former coworkers have said little good about his ability to do his job. In fact, I think he may have been gently eased out the door.

I tend to like Bill Baker and Syd Simmons. To me they are on par with any of the Big 10 announcing crews I've listened to over the years. They have a "folskie, down on the farm" type charm that aligns well with a school located in the argricultural heartland of the Midwest. Keep in mind many people (myself included) don't have much exposure to the NIU announcing crew given that Huskie games have historically been carried by a couple 13 1/2 watt radio stations emanating out of Hooterville and Pixley.

In terms of the Score doing select basketball games, I like the fact that it places added pressure to do something about our head basketball coach sooner rather than later. I keep telling myself "just one more year of the Rob Judson nightmare."
