As I watch the Atlanta Falcons pick apart the Baltimore Ravens, I am impressed by the athletic ability of former Bowling Green receiver Cole Magner. The dude's played most of the 2nd half and is all over the field making nice catches and returning punts. The commentators think he has gone from a long shot to getting a possible roster slot. The problem is the Falcons have gone from being light 2 years ago to heavy at WR with Roddy White (this years 1st Rnd), Michael Jenkins (last years 1st Rnd), Peerless Price, Bryan Finnerran, and Dez White (all pretty solid) among others.
So what can you share with me that makes Magner special enough to stand apart and make this NFL roster? (BTW I am rooting for the guy 03-razz )
You would be hard pressed to find a receiver who runs a more precise route. He runs like he's guided by a laser.
Tough as nails...refuses to go down easily...goes 110%...great kid!! All Toledo fans are so envious of his ability and great looks it is pathetic.

Cole probably has a leg up on the other receivers fighting for the last spot because he is also returning punts...and doing so pretty effectively!!
You'll never get tired of announcers telling the story of how he was the last guy picked by one vote to make the BG squad. Never! Never will you tire of this amazing tale!

EVER!!!

He's one of the toughest players I've ever seen in my life. He caught I-don't-know-how-many passes over the middle at Bowling Green -- got hit by a truck again and again -- and always got up like nothing had happened.

He was a quarterback at Palmer (Alaska) Colony High School. Bowling Green converted him to receiver, but used him for some gadget plays. I think Magner threw four touchdown passes for his career, including two in a 51-28 whalloping of Missouri in 2002.

(If he could have just a tiny bit more touch on a throw he made the next season, the Falcons just might have beaten Ohio State, too.)

Magner even plays a little basketball. When Bowling Green's basketball team was decimated by a series of injuries, Magner walked on and did a respectable job defensively. I think he even hit a game-winning shot in one game.

You look at that kid and think no way no way does he belong in the NFL. But he's special, as you are seeing.

There are a whole bunch of people here who will talk your ear off even more:

I can't even tell you many times I heard Holly Rowe on ESPN tell that story over the past two seasons. It was like a movie that you watch over and over and you can say the lines along with the character. Great story...but beaten to death!

Happy to see Magner making an impression. I may regret making my statement that Magner would not make it in the NFL. 05-nono :chair:
Magner was impressive. I don't see how you cut him, but I'm surprised who the Falcons cut every year. I think Magner could help a lot on special teams.
Check out somme quotes from last nights game from Vick about Magner. Looks like he will make the team:

Q: How would you rate the effectiveness of the passing game against a tough secondary?
Vick: They have a pretty tough secondary, but we tried some different pass concept this week, some things we didn't do last week. With a different game plan you'll get different results. Roddy White had a good game. I think some of the other guys Cole Magner had a great catch did some good things. We have some things to learn from. That's what we have to come back and do this week watch some film and really critique it and pick out the thins we can do even better next week and try to learn from it.

What are your impressions of Cole Magner?
Vick: Cole looked good. He's been impressive throughout the entire training camp. We're very excited about him. He's a guy who goes out and catches the ball with no gloves on, straight hands, so you have to respect that. He's a playmaker. I've been watching him the last month and a half and critiquing him. I think he's going to make this football team.

Come on, Schad. Those trucks were supplied by [sneer]MAC defenses.[/sneer]

Surely you can't compare the hits which happen against an [angelic choir]SEC or ACC[/angelic choir] defense.
As a loyal Rocket fan, I still think Cole Magner is a an a$$!

Who cares about his looks? Have you been watching American Idol again?

RWT, is there something you're not telling us?

You scuds are the ones so envious of him.
I always thought Magner was a decent receiver, and his athletic ability as a sometimes qb helped your offense as well. A lot of programs wish they had a kid with his combination of talent and heart.

Gawd, that made me 03-puke just to type it. 03-wink

If he can actually catch passes, that puts him ahead of Dez White.

Sincerely,

A Bears fan
If the falcons keep Dez White ahead of him-- they will deserve what they get!!!

(i.e., that would be a dumb move)
What? No love for the Dez Man?
He has skills...like bow staff skills...
nunchuck skills...computer hacking skills.
He's pretty much my favorite receiver. 03-wink

Just remind Magner which way to run.

Cole Magner continues gathering attention here in Atlanta. He got another 3 receptions tonight and lots of mentions throughout the broadcast. Among the topics, his new nickname is Sunshine, in reference to a character from Remember the Titans, not to mention his platinum blond hair. It was also reported that Vick is real impressed with his catching and the fact he doesn't use gloves. The hotbed of football talent, Alaska, and Bowling Green also got some props.
Looks like he's starting to emerge as a "personality" on the team, somthing that bodes very well for his chances on making the roster.
Magner is a VERY good athlete...... Here's a cut and paste from next level scouting on his pro day numbers.

"BOWLING GREEN (March 15th) senior wide receiver COLE MAGNER ran between 4.55 and 4.58 in the 40... 3.82/4.08 short shuttle... 6.42/6.49 three-cone... 10.95 60-yard... 31" vertical... 9'8" broad jump... weighed in at 6010, 195 pounds... when compared to the results of WR's at the Combine his three-cone times are amazing, as only Indiana's Courtney Roby was the closest at 6.61, plus no one over 190 pounds even broke below 6.9, and there were only seven total WR's at the Combine that broke 7.0... a total of 11 teams were represented at this workout"

And Bob Davie has a serious case of man love for him....
