Athens -- The University of Georgia Athletic Association is seeking $1 million in damages from Tulane University for canceling three scheduled football games against the Bulldogs.

The federal lawsuit, filed Tuesday, names Tulane athletics director Rick ****son as a defendant individually. Georgia claims Tulane "continued to act in bad faith, remained stubborn and deceitful, and refused to follow the terms of the contract."

The Bulldogs and Green Wave were scheduled to play in Sanford Stadium on Sept. 21, but ****son sent Georgia athletics director Vince Dooley "official notification" on Oct. 18, 2001, that Tulane "is delaying the scheduling of our 3-game series [with Georgia]."

Georgia officials were forced to schedule Division I-AA Northwestern State of Louisiana as Tulane's replacement for this year. They still have not found replacements for the 2003 and 2008 games.

"In major college football, you have to schedule games long in advance," said Athens attorney Ed Tolley, who filed the lawsuit on UGA's behalf. "It's an extreme hardship when games are canceled without advance notice. We've made efforts to resolve this issue with authorities at Tulane, but they've been met with deaf ears."

****son is named as a defendant individually because he wrote Dooley that his school was delaying the contract because Conference USA had increased the number of league games from seven to eight. But the lawsuit contends that the contract was canceled so Tulane could play Texas next year. The Green Wave, which is coached by former Bulldogs assistant Chris Scelfo, is scheduled to meet the Longhorns next year on the same day it was supposed to play Georgia.
