Dear friends,

As most of you know, today was our appointments for Amanda. Although the news was not what we desired, it was still positive news, and we are thankful that.

What we learned and what was new...We learned that the lesion has, in fact, shrunk by approximately one mm. Surgery is still considered the only long-term option. Amanda’s lesion will not shift or move, and has actually set up in a position that pushes the brain away from the lesion. This is important because this makes the surgery much easier. The chance of hitting a part of the brain that would cause permanent damage goes all the way down to under 1%.

Both doctors agreed that we could wait up to two years before having the procedure. Since the tongue numbness was the last symptom to leave, it means it is very likely the first symptom she will see should it reoccur before the surgery. It is also the most-likely candidate for a permanent effect should the lesion bleed again, which is a lot better than eye problems.

In the meantime, we will keep a eye on the lesion via MRI each quarter or so. We have an appointment set up in December. As long as the lesion remains as is, we can continue our wait. If it grows, or if symptoms reoccur, we are within two weeks of surgery at that time. Since I am a teacher and coach, we would like to wait until the beginning of this summer, or possibly next, to have this procedure. This will give us another year or two to see what medical progress can be made, and give Amanda more time with the two children, allowing them to age a little more before the brain surgery. Recovery time is two to three months. In the meantime, she has actually been given more leeway on her activity. She’s not been cleared to go out and prepare for any Olympic events, but she can go back to a more-normal lifestyle. We are very thankful for that. .

So, the lesion is not gone and surgery still appears on the horizon. However, we are thankful to God that the news was more encouraging than a few weeks ago. Thank each of you who made this a priority on your prayer list. Thanks to all for the calls, visits, and cards. We are fortunate to be surrounded by good friends. Please do not stop praying for her. We will keep everybody up-to-date on our progress.

With warmest regards,
Eagle in the gym
