This alum has had it. I'm sick of our school continually being publically humiliated. Over and over on the bottom of the screen people all over the country get to see we got our asses kicked again. I'm sure the ESPN.com Bottom 10 author is already working on some witty put-down of UB. I haven't felt this embarassed since Fraternity Life and Sorority Life aired on MTV...but at least that was over after a few months. This embarassment has been going on for almost ten years.

It is well past time to give up this fantasy of being a Division I-A program. There are no teams with the direction "Central" on our schedule this year, so who are we going to beat?

Yes, I realize this means moving the basketball team to a different conference, but I don't see that as a negative. As long as you're in a one-bid conference, what difference does it make which one you're in? And I see the commissioner doing nothing to make this a multiple-bid conference.

The America East conference just lost Northeastern, so they have room for us. We should be in a northeast conference anyway. The football team can go back to being a I-AA independent and play A-10, Patriot, Northeast, Ivy and Gateway teams. Besides, the difference in quality between the MAC and elite I-AA programs is not that great. It's much less than anyone on this board will admit to.
Don't feel so bad. UCONN has a lot of team speed. When we played them in the MCB last year that was what hurt us the worst. If they find some good talent at the skilled positions they are going to be a very good team.

Now take a deep breath and let it out s-l-o-w-l-y.

Believe me, we who travel to Ypsilanti to get our college sports fix know how you feel.03-banghead Be (more) patient. It takes a long time to grow a football team. UB hasn't been doing it that long. And remember, it's never too early to start drinking heavily. 04-drinky

UB has been playing football since 1894.
No, I won't be more patient. You see, I'm the rare UB alum. I remember when the team was competitive and going to games was enjoyable. But then, I'm 32. I doubt any UB fan under 30 remembers when the program showed promise. My senior year ('95) the team went 8-3 and finished 25th in the final I-AA poll.

I'm sure I'm also a rarity on this board in that I'll take the I-AA playoffs over a Tuesday night bowl game over the seventh best school from a BCS league. In 2003, I watched Colgate with a great deal of envy. Not only did they whip us, they went 15-0 before losing in the I-AA championship game. This is a school that doesn't offer athletic scholarships. If they can do that, we certainly can.

I don't think the decision to join the MAC had anything to do with football. We know it wasn't Cirbus' idea. I'm sure it was to get out of that flaming sack of dog poop which is the Mid-Continent Conference. But, with all the conference shuffling in the last 10 years, if UB had held its ground and waited, it would undoubtedly be in the America East with the football team in the A-10.
You have my sympathies and you may be right about football, but MAC basketball post-season fortunes will turn around with the addition (finally) of KSU AD Laing Kennedy to the selection committee.
I promise.

What I said last week certainly hasn't changed. And I'm still waiting for someone to tell me why the move to I-A was a good one and why going back to I-AA would be a bad idea.

Buffalo was major college from 1961-1970, then dropped football completely.

They played Division III football from 1978-1992, then spent about five years in I-AA before joining the MAC.

It seems to me that Buffalo just isn't recruiting the players it needs. Upstate New York is *not* a hot bed. That makes it difficult.

I know there are some MAC fans who would love to run Buffalo out of the league. I'm not one of them. Academically, I like the company we keep by having Buffalo in the league, and clearly the basketball program is starting to make our league better.

On the other hand, the lack of noticeable improvement in football is disappointing. I think we all would have expected more progress by now.

I will give you a reason why you should stick to I-A football. Being an NIU fan and sitting through one of the worst losing streaks in I-A football I felt like you are feeling right now after many games. I thought NIU should drop to I-AA because then we might win a few games, although with how bad our teams were even in I-AA wins woulda been hard to come by. I can tell you this, when NIU turned its program around it was one of the best feelings ever. UB has been down but they will turn it around and when they do you will be happy they stuck with I-A. I travel a lot and in 2003 when I was in different parts of the country walking around with my NIU gear on everyone would come upto me and talk NIU football. One day UB will have a good football team, you will be competitive in MAC play, beat a BCS team, maybe even ranked. You will be walking around some random state on the west coast and someone will go upto and say hey I saw that UB game last night, you have a great team. Right then and there it will be worth it to stay in I-A football, your chest will swell and you will have great pride in your university and be extremely proud of your team. Right now its tough I know, but stick with it. If you win the I-AA ten years in a row nobody will care and know nothing about UB football. If you beat a BCS team then your team will be known across America. Look at Ohio, they were front page news and everyone knows about this team now. Stick with it and until your team turns it around do what I did, drink heavily.
Don't give up...They still can pick the right coach...You have invested too much to drop back down...keep the faith
Football won't be dropped but unfortunately for Coach Hofher, he will probably have to be shown the door. The new AD (a former Michigan player for Bo) probably has some names lined up already. UB needs an infusion of fresh ideas and recruiters. Hofher has one final card to pull out of his hip pocket. He may decide to start true freshman QB Drew Willy this weekend. Willy showed some promise vs. Syracuse in mop up time and actually had pocket presence and completed a few downfield passes. He's a highly regarded recruit from New Jersey. I don't think they really wanted to use him this year but time has run out on coach to get something done. He has to do it now.
