I think this deal may have been signed a while back, but I don't remember hearing about it and don't remember an official release about it.

Anyway.....UT AD of Media Relations, Paul Helgrin, has told me we have a home and home series with Florida International for 2008 and 2009. We host FIU on September 27th of 2008 and then play at FIU in 2009. Not sure of the exact date in 2009 though.

UT now has one opening for 2007 (probably a road game), one opening for 2008 (probably a road game), and one opening for 2009 (probably a home game) before our OOC schedules through 2009 will be filled.

rf,

BG has a home and home starting next year with FIU.

Sure they aren't a big name in 1-A but man oh man look at the recruits in Florida!

Plus, your team gets a trip to Miami. :D

I like it.
Wow!
First you impress the crap out me with a 1 for 1 with ISU and just when we all thought that you couldn't do any better, you pull a 1 for 1 with FIU out of your butts.
I fear we are going to be losing UT to the Big 10 any day now. :)

Seriously, this is good.
I believe that any time that we schedual 1 for 1 with another confernce (BCS or SBC or CBS for that matter) it is a possitive for your program.
That said, as you know, some schools and conferences are more possitve tham others.
And FIU?
Ehhh, I would have much rather seen the Rockets schedule a 1-1 with Utah, TCU, Air Force, aTm, Texas Tech, or if they had to go to Florida...USF. I wouldn't mind seeing the Golden Knights come to Toledo twice in a 2-1 either though (if they had to make a presence in Florida). :D

Mike O'Brien has been doing a great job with scheduling lately...but this one :snore:
FIU is young right now, just started playing football in 2002. They opened at Kansas State this year and only lost 35-21 (they were only down 13-7 at halftime). Marshall hosts Kansas State this Saturday, so we will get to see how good KSU is, but a terrible program doesn't play that good against any BCS school so I can't believe that FIU has a terrible program.

This Saturday FIU plays at Texas Tech.

Don Strock is the head coach at FIU. He was a QB for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL for several years. Before going to FIU, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL for three seasons. He will build a nice program at FIU and they will be much improved by 2007.

Plus the main reason for this deal is that UT has been recruiting Southern Florida pretty hard the last few years and this gives those recruits a chance to play back home and a chance for other Florida recruits to recognize Toledo.

They can't be trusted.
Go figure. I thought Florida International was an airport.

No that's OU. :D :D :D
I honestly don't know why anyone would make fun of a MAC school playing a home and home with FIU. Besides the trip to Florida and the help it is for recruiting Florida, there is this other thing. Let me explain:

We MAC fans have complained about how we aren't winning OOC games, especially against BCS schools. Both BG and UT have home and home series in the near future with FIU, giving the MAC a pretty good chance at 4 OOC wins against I-A opponents. There is nothing wrong with UT and BG scheduling these games.

I am amazed at times from what I read on here from MAC fans. When we play a top program we complain that we are losing OOC games because we are playing top teams on the road and need to get some home games and so forth. When we play a decent I-A program where we get a home game in return for a nice trip somewhere, we complain again because it is a crappy program.

Believe it or not, on the BG board I read a post from a BG fan cracking on Toledo playing a home and home series with Iowa State because he says that ISU is a bad Big 12 team. Whether that is the case or not (and ISU is expected to battle for the Big 12 North Division title this year), I assume he would rather a MAC school play at Oklahoma, USC, Iowa, etc. and then complain about not beating anybody. Of course this fan forgets that BG has a home and home with FIU starting next season and has played Missouri and Kansas in past years, who were on the same level as ISU if not below them.

You read that post out of context, I think.

There was another longish debate on the significance of a home-and-home with Iowa State.

Some -- including me -- believe it isn't any more of a big deal than bringing in a Boise State or Fresno State. For whatever reason, that conclusion came up again. It wasn't a crack, specifically.

Incidentally: I think one could argue Kansas has a weaker program than Iowa State.

I don't think the same argument could be made about Missouri. Iowa State may be playing better ball right now, but in terms of a program, it's hard for me not to see Missouri as a significant bit ahead.

And FIU? What is wrong with them? Sure they are a new program but they are still 1-A.

I am thinking of making that trip next season to Miami for the FIU game. I'll see if I have any funds left over after Ohio State slams me for $65 a ticket for 4 tix at the Shoe.

Boise State and Fresno State are good programs, but the football world still looks at mid-majors with skepticism.Unfortunately that non-BCS stigma is branded on some very good programs.
