Big move for Ohio and CMU. I think its a little early put too much stock in polls. This week will gives a better idea about Miami. A loss at Kent State would confirm that the Redhawks are on the decline. Kent has a chance to put themselves in contention with a win Saturday.
Let's be candid; until we see how well the Rockets fair against Fresno State, BGSU is probably still the top dog. I'd also switch the Chips and Cats.
That BGSU offense is unbelievable. Its impossible for many mac teams to score that many points. That fact that Ball State lit up BGSU for 31 points keeps the MAC from telling Detroit to order orange paint just yet. BGSU must be terrified about playing NIU. How many yards and Td's would the Huskies put up on BG's run defense. BGSU may run away with the east, but I would favor Toledo/NIU at this point to win the MAC championship at this point.

Actually I would say that until we have seen that Toledo is not that good, they should be considered the Top Dog because the are the defending MAC Champions.

The jury is still out on most of the schools. Let's see how BG does against Boise. Let's see how Miami does against Kent State and see how good CMU, EMU, and Akron really are. I would also like to see NIU against a MAC school before passing judgement on them. I really want to see WMU play someone else too. They played Virginia tough, but who knows how good Virginia actually is.

This early in the season it is too difficult to predict who is the best this year, and that is why I say Toledo being the defending champions has to be the team to beat early in the year.

Back in 2004 I would have said Miami was the team to beat early in the year because they were the defending MAC Champions, so don't think I am just saying this because I am a Rocket fan.
For me, it's new year, new teams. I think you have to judge them independently on how they are doing this year alone. I wouldn't rank a team based on how it did the year before. The only poll when you can't do that is the pre-season poll, but even then, I would make my best guess as to how they will do, not simply rank them according to how they did the year before.
Now that means that the early rankings are going to jump around quite a bit.

I agree with that statement, but only if you don't do a poll until October. In reality it is too early to know about this year. So you need to go by last year and what they have coming back.

Now when I say rank them by last year, I am only talking about the team that won it. The reason I say that is because they are the defending champions and they know how to win it while the others are still trying to learn that. As for the other 11 teams it is more of a mix between what they have coming back and how they performed last year with the players that are coming back.

Then you just throw Temple in at the bottom because................well they're Temple.

BG is not terrified to play anyone. Sure NIU's running game could tear us up. But since most here agree our Offense is unbelievable, I think we could score on NIU. Funny how NIU gave up 31 to Ball State last year yet we were "lit up" for 31 the other night. BG was missing 3 starters and Ball State is better this year. BTW, an example of getting "lit up" is the 72 BG hung on OU in 2002. 03-wink

The good thing is our defense has time to correct the mistakes and hopefully the improvement (for our sake) continues thru the season. Our DC is still pretty new and is moving some guys around and looking at other possibilities. As long as we're playing our best D as the season goes on, I think BG will win the East. UT did that very thing last year winning the West and MAC.

Right now, my #1 is Toledo. They are the defending MAC Champs ( 03-banghead ) and until someone claims that trophy....

I think NIU can do it this year. Will they is another question.

Since BG doesn't play until next Wed, I'm gonna head over to the Kent/Miami game this Sat. Might as well scout 2 future opponents at the same time. If Miami loses, they are in a world of trouble. A must game in week 3.

One thing for sure about the MAC...there is not one dominant team. People talk about the "Top 4" but some of these other teams are fast approaching...and that is good for the conference.

Should make for a very exciting finish.
