Chicago Leo star Don Lawson has given a verbal commitment to play his college basketball for the Western Michigan University Broncos. Lawson ranks as one of the top Class of 2006 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois.

Lawson, a 6-9 post, is both long and athletic. He excels as both a rebounder, and also as a shot-blocker. In 2004, Lawson was part of a powerhouse Leo team that won the Class A state championship.

Lawson told ChicagoHoops.com that he is looking forward to playing for, and continuing to develop his post skills under head coach Steve Hawkins. Western Michigan has been one of the elite teams in the Mid-American Conference the past two seasons under Hawkins, boasting a record of 46-17, and advancing to the NCAA tournament in 2004, and the NIT in 2005.

Lawson also noted that it is nice to have the recruiting process over with so he can now focus all of his attention toward putting Chicago Leo in position to bring the Class A state championship back home.

This summer, Lawson competed on the AAU circuit with Larry Butler's Illinois Warriors. He is the third member of the Warriors to make a verbal commitment. Jon Scheyer (Glenbrook North) has verballed to Duke, and Jeff Ryan (Glenbrook South) has verballed to Northwestern.

Not only has Hawkins recruited a terrific class, he's recognized that better scheduling is the key in program growth, and he's been able to get Western Michigan into the <a href='http://oahu.Aloha-Hawaii.com/activities/rainbow+classic' target='_blank'>Hawaii "Rainbow Classic"</a>in December. The Bronco's first game is against Colorado State, while other conferences represented in the eight team tournament include the Pac-10, Big 12, & the Big East.
Western seems to sign to a stud every week. Interesting recruiting strategy. How many schollies does Western have left. Ohio is holding back a spot or two hoping to land a transfer that has needs playing time. This year we have Johnnie Jackson a Boston College transfer. BC recruited Dudley after Jackson and Jackson lost his chance at starting for BC. Ohio gained a big time shooter who can play the 4. Western is going after a lot of high school talent. Akron goes after a lot of transfers. Miami tends to go after high school talent. Different strategy used by different coaches. Some coaches realize that reloading is more popular than rebuilding. High school kids may have a bigger upside long term, while transfers have more experience and polished skills.
...And Judson keeps sucking. :crying: We can't recruit Chicago(please don't ask, we can't figure it out either) so we are recruiting Texas. 03-banghead

Texas?
Great for Football, but B-Ball?
No offense to the Broncos and their fans, but why does WMU keep getting all of these supposed "studs"? They do not have exceptional history, facilities, coaching, etc. and if you look at past trends they usually only hang around the middle of the pack in the MAC. So, why Western Mich.??

If you had ever been to Kalamazoo you would know why.
Come on, we have an International Airport for Gods sake!

I've been very impressed with WMU's recruiting thus far. One thing that I really envy is that Hawkins is getting the kids out of WMU's backyard. Some big time program are after these kids and WMU is beating them straight up. Didn't one of your other recruits, a big guard I think, have an offer from MSU on the table?

WM has had three straight 20 win seasons, three straight post season bids. A better question is why can't the rest of the MAC schedule as well as WM?
I know you're not talking to us. 05-nono
Don Lawson is 16 years old, 6’-9", and 230 pounds. He is in excellent academic shape with a 3.95 grade point average. And, he chose Western for our engineering programs.

The only things I can come up with as potential reasons is we have someone who knows the Texas High school recruiting well or since we can't recruit Chicago(very well), we would get better players from elsewhere than being stuck with barely 1a quality we would be stuck with if we did recruit Chicago(ie. we get the leftovers after EVERYONE has picked Chicago clean of the talent).
I applaud Hawkins and his the effort of his staff. Recruiting is a tough and dirty business. I feel like O'Shea, Hawkins, Buckley, and Akron's staff have been the best recruiters in the MAC the last 2-3 years.

Hawkins is a first class guy. I can see how he would attract good kids. Plus, even though Univ. Arena only holds 5-6,000 people, it has enjoyed a great gameday atmosphere the past few years...kids have to be impressed with that.
