Does anyone know if Ohio University has the same standing as:

University of Michigan
Unversity of Illinois
University of Oklahoma
University of Texas etc.

It seems that they should be on the same level. What happened? Their reputation is well below the others?
How about Illinois State vs.

Iowa State
Michigan State
Ohio State
NC State
Florida State
Colorado State
Oklahoma State
Kansas State

With the exception of Florida, Illinois has more poplulation than all of these states.
Illinois state was founded as a Normal school, just like NIU. It started as a teachers college and grew to what it is today. Not much unlike NIU. They're probably shared the same types of struggles, if not the same struggles, we have.
I think it is a fair comparisson based on the size of the states involved. Most of the schools on the list started out as something smaller than the other state school, but they have grown to near equl stature. What went wrong at ISU? If they had the NIU Admin of the late 60's, they would probably be in the Big 12 by now. NIU will always be held back unfairly by the directional name. ISU does not have this bias.
I guess my main point is that all other University of ... are held in a much higher esteem. Ohio U seems to be a second tier school. I am sure that their academics are great but their reputation is ?

I know NIU has to battle the directional school issue but Ohio U doesn't.

I think that Ohio University is spoke of in the same academic circles as Miami OH. Which is a damn good circle to be included in........

But there are a lot of hippies in Athens. Minus points awarded.

I can just see HuskieDan packing his bags now!
Miami is a top drawer school with an outstanding national academic reputation.

Ohio U is a good school but not on par with Miami when it comes to academics. Many Miami applicants chose OU as a second choice if they are not accepted at Miami.

tOSU was never known as a top academic school for undergrads. For years they accepted all who applied regardless of academic credentials. That began to change 10-15 years ago while Gordon Gee was president. They are now selective in their admissions and their academic reputation has really improved.
I guess I am trying to figure out why Ohio U. is not the No.1 school in the state.
What went wrong with their progress?

Michigan - Michigan State
Illinois - Illinois State
Iowa - Iowa State
Oklahoma - Oklahoma State
Ohio - Ohio State?

Why has Ohio never gotten above MAC status?

I have not questioned their academics.

Likely the same reasons as here. Probably money. Most of the money probably goes to tOSU. Also, location can play into it. Athens vs Columbus. Politics is a third possibility(can go back to money issue).
There arte ALOT of state schools to be supported in Ohio.
Taxdollars only go so far.

Miami is a top shelf school. I have zero clue the status and reputation of Ohio (or Buffalo), but would be interested in knowing.
Different states also have different dynamics with their universities. Different schools also have very different missions.

ISU, as stated has the same history as NIU, only longer. For practical purposes, think of them as Central IL U. UI is the land grant school.

The rest of what I have to say is semi-educated speculation.

Without knowing the particulars of Ohio, Miami and Toledo's histories it appears the state of Ohio's system is similar to Wisconsin- a main land grant school and a bunch of regional schools- just with different naming conventions. Institutional age, size of the state, money etc accounting for differences there. Its worth noting that some schools began as private and long, long ago were acquired by states as part of expanding higher ed. That may be the case with Ohio. Concievably their history may be more comparable even to, say Illinois College up to the point they (OU) became a state school or our ISU.

Michigan State I believe is the land grant there (generally A&Ms were land grant)- but they may be like Indiana where the "flagship" function is split between two schools.

Buffalo has a very good academic reputation from what I have heard from many on the main board. Maybe not Miami but not far off.

See 66,109 and 115 National Universities(Miami-Oh, Ohio and Buffalo in that order)
