An Oklahoma City soccer coach accused of punching a
police officer during a youth tournament faces a charge of
felony battery.
Billy Martin is an assistant coach at Oklahoma City
University. He also coached a 15-and-under boys team in the
Snickers US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Tournament
in North Little Rock.
He's accused of hitting police Detective Michael Gibbons
during an altercation on the field during a Sunday game
against a Florida team.
Gibbons said several players were brawling and the referee
was struck. He said he was trying to pull a player out of the
melee.
The officer says he displayed his badge and told Martin he
was an officer, but that Martin struck him in the face,
bloodying his nose.
Martin was released on bail and has a court appearance next
month.
