I was unsure about Miami. I know they are in the town of Oxford….not Miami. I know the Miami River is near their campus, and I think there was a near by Miami Indian tribe. So was Miami named after the river or Indians?

I was not sure about Bowling Green either. Are they a "city" or a "town"?

Regarding Ball State I know they were named after the Ball family who were the inventors of the Ball Canning Jars because they donated the land on which the campus is built.

The Miamis Indians were related to the Delaware, Shawnee, and Ottawa Indians. They spoke an Algonquian dialect.Their greatest Chief was Little Turtle. He led the Miamis along with other Ohio Indians against General Anthony Wayne troops at the Battle of Fallen Timbers outside of Toledo. At the Treaty of Greenville the Miamis were forced to give up most of their lands in Ohio.
So what! Who or what is Miami named after.....the Indians or the river.
I believe - the Indians. The Great Miami River is actually at least 20 miles from Oxford.
