Ohio - 16,721
Akron - 15,612
CMU - 15,013

(I'm a bit surprised at the CMU total... it looked like there was more than 15K on TV)

For curiosity's sake:

CUSA

UTEP - 50,425
UCF - 22,127
Tulsa - 20,645
SMU - 15,681
Temple:
8,922
Temple please tell me that was for a pick up game for the basketball team.

You're right - that can't possibly be right. The endzone (student section was stuffed), and the visitors' side was about 60% full (some with HS bands - it was band day). That right there should be about 5,000-6,000.

I never got up to walk to the other side and look back at the home side - but we were in the last section (south end) of the home side and it seemed pretty well full as we looked north. There could not have been less than 22,000 total there.

Perhaps some of them are let in free and therefore don't count in paid attendence? Do CMU students pay for their tickets? That might be the difference right there. And the HS bands may not have to pay either - since they're playing at halftime (be kind of rude to make them pay to play for us).

The bands obviously shouldn't have to pay, but each should have a ticket though. We should have a band day every week then!

I'm a little disappointed in Ohio's and Akron's attendence.

Ohio's got Frank, but not attendance after that first home game.. I thought they should have had at least 20k.

Akron: I also though they would have 20k. Was that the home opener? They have a good team, and with a good NIU team in there, I just though it should have been more than 15k..
I wasn't attacking these schools for the att, but just thought they should have been higher.

Even CMU's could have been higher with that rivalry game. Especially after their win at home over Miami..

That was a win on the road over Miami(OH)

And I'm not sure many consider EMU a rival, WMU is CMU's primary rival
Sorry for the mixup... But actually, i think that win would have done something for the attendence anyway. It's still a big win.
The bad about the Akron area support for the Zips: we have many fair weather fans. They only come out when we're winning. Also, every year it takes them three or four wins to become convinced we're actually "winning." Then they'll get out to the bowl.

The good news: they WILL come out when we win. Attendance at football last year was up quite a bit, and I could tell men's basketball was more last year just by eyeballing it. Of course, our men's basketball team is on a roll.

I look for a good crowd when the Zips meet the Flashes on Thanksgiving morning. National tv, and already a lot of folks are talking about hitting a good game before going home to gorge themselves. Should be fun.
Seems the press is wary of the figures, too.

This from the Associated Press story:

Quote:A sparse crowd turned out at Lincoln Financial Field, with maybe 1,500 fans in the stands for kickoff, though an attendance of 8,922 was announced. On the visitor's side of the stadium, the second level and upper deck were empty. Only a few fans were in the end zone seats and the biggest cheers came at halftime for a kid's football game.
Who is doing the counting at CMU?

I was pretty impressed by the turnout. The place was at least 3/4 full if not better, so, considering that the capacity is roughly 30K, attemdance appeared to be at least in the 20-23K range.
I was disappointed with the attendance too. I think it will pick up if we keep winning and if the weather cooperates, but I hate excuses like that personally. I would expect our next game, homecoming, will be a good turnout. Especially if we can at least get 1 win vs. BG or CMU...

Akron and kent fans are similar with their teams. Show some winning, and they'll start to come out. Well, most of the time. I look forward to that Thanksgiving game also. In the last few years, that game has been great for attendence no matter where it is. If only we played more than once!

I think we're gonna go to that game as well. I don't wanna sit home watching any freakin parade.
I do wonder if paid attendance is hurting our totals. I was at both KSU games and thought both seemed low.
