GAME RECAP
Brian Hazelwood kicked a 39-yard field goal with 8:49 remaining,
lifting Mississippi State to a 17-16 victory over eighth-ranked
Alabama, which missed an extra point and squandered a chance to
clinch the Southeastern Conference's West Division.

Hazelwood's kick was set up by a 69-yard pass to Reginald Kelly
from Derrick Taite, who completed just 8-of-20 passes for 152
yards. Alabama (8-2, 5-2 SEC) had taken a 16-14 lead just 2:33
earlier on a 42-yard field goal by John Brock.

But Brock missed an extra point after Shaun Alexander's 11-yard
touchdown run with 2:46 left in the first half. The miss left
the Crimson Tide trailing by a point and ultimately was the
difference in the game.

Alabama has had trouble on special teams all season. Brock had
made 7-of-8 extra points before the miss. Brian Cunningham, who
has handled most of the placekicking duties this season, was
19-of-21 on extra points but did not play.

Alabama can still win the West Division with a home victory next
week against hated rival Auburn. If Auburn wins, Louisiana
State would meet unbeaten Florida in the SEC Championship.

Robert Isaac carried 21 times for 96 yards and a touchdown for
Mississippi State (4-5, 2-4), which had lost its last 15
meetings with Alabama. The Bulldogs have won just 12 of 81
games in the series.

"The biggest thing you can say when you have a win like this,
especially considering the circumstances we have had to endure,
is that the players and the coaches never, never gave up," said
MSU coach Jackie Sherrill, who won for the first time in eight
games against his alma mater.

Alexander, a freshman, ran for 106 yards and a touchdown and
Dennis Riddle added 103 yards and a score for Alabama, which had
not lost to MSU since 1980 and has never lost in 12 past visits
to Starkville.

"This win is probably the greatest win we could have for
Mississippi State, for us and for the fans," Sherrill added.
"Playing on national television, against a team that had the
momentum going down the stretch -- it's a great day for
Mississippi State."

But the Tide got another bad game from quarterback Freddie
Kitchens, who was 9-for-18 for 93 yards and an interception.
Warren Foust briefly replaced Kitchens and was just 1-of-6 for
12 yards and an interception.

Isaac broke a couple of tackles on a 17-yard touchdown run with
13 seconds left in the first period that capped an 80-yard drive
in 11 plays.

After the ensuing kickoff, Alabama drove 65 yards in eight plays
for the tying score. Riddle covered the final three yards for
his 11th TD of the season.

Cornerback Izell McGill had two interceptions, including one
that set up the Bulldogs at the Tide 15. On 3rd-and-7, Taite
found Lamont Woodberry with a 12-yard touchdown pass for a 14-7
lead with 8:04 left before halftime.

Alexander, who rushed for a school-record 291 yards last week
against LSU, capped an 80-yard march with his touchdown. But
Brock missed the conversion kick.

After his go-ahead kick, Hazelwood missed a 43-yarder exactly
four minutes later. But Alabama's last possession ended in the
final minute on a dropped pass on fourth down.

I remember watching this one...it was a great game.

I definitely remember that one. For two years I had a piece of the terf from that game growing in a planter. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />
