Only qualified sick reply: "Too bad the National Guardsmen were "bad shots" at Kent State."
its coming out on the 22nd right. thats gonna be a family thing we all go see together going into the christmas weekend.
oh yeah just wanted to say to you Marshall fans I know this happened a long time ago but I think it shows the spirit of Marshall to come back from that. Thats something that stays with a university through its lifetime. I can honestly say that that type of attitude is not often found after a tragedy of this magnitude but Marshall University seems to be a place with no quit in them no matter what. Honestly that whats scares me about you guys. Eventually that attitude is gonna get you back to the top.
Several from CUSA have responded. I can't believe that a mod or admin hasn't addressed some of the things said there. FWIW, we're happy to have the Herd and their fans in CUSA. I can't understand where the MAC/Marshll stuff started, but after reading that thread, it's pretty obvious where the anomosity started......and it wasn't in Huntington.
To be honest, the bad blood runs way way back on both sides. It's a story that doesn't need to be re-told, I don't think, but it's got its roots on both sides (back to even before the plane crash). Very few arguments or disagreements are completely one sided.

Anymore, I just avoid the situation altogether. There were many posters over on the MAC board that I got along with fairly well...but (forgive me if this makes me weak or thin-skinned) I just couldn't bear the constant generalized Marshall hate that went on, so I just stopped going. Now, don't get me wrong. There was plenty of that recriprocated by some...well, overzealous Marshall posters. But at what point does it not matter who started it, since neither side seems to have enough mature fans to just let it go? Can nobody be positive minded anymore?

Ahem...sorry.../soapbox off ;-)

(*edit to fix a typo)
Thank goodness you all have left those people behind. I am proud that my school is in the same conference as Marshall (although I wish you wouldn't embarrass us on the football field again like you did this year). Marshall's story is truly inspirational and I can't wait to see the movie. I think it's pretty cool that this conference is home to the two programs that have significant enough and inspirational enough stories to have had movies made about them. Welcome home to CUSA.

WE ARE MARSHALL!

I'm sure it does, Ed. Stories are never as onesided as they appear. However, that thread shows a complete lack of regard for human compassion for what the Herd family suffered through and recovered from. Basic compassion for our fellow man dictates that decent people respond to an event that wipes out dozens of very young adults, coaches and an entire football program with respect. That didn't happen in that thread. Anyway, that's my opinion.
Yeah, gonna see We Are Marshall on opening day. Looks like a quality movie and im looking forward to it. So that means CUSA will have 2 sports movies out about teams in their conference....awesome.....

Can't argue that too much. I just wanted to try to at least make a respectable effort at keeping it from degrading further. I mean, it really does no good. Over there, they're mostly convinced that we're all value-distorted, inferiority complex saddled fans with an axe to grind (mostly because of a few old posters). And they're not going to change that opinion, regardless of whether we approach things level-headed, or if we chide them for their remarks. So, I just see it as not worth bothering. They're welcome to their opinions, and I hope their lives are better for having invested that much of their life's frustration into a hatred for Marshall. Meanwhile, I refuse to get all bent out of shape over it because I've got more positive directions in which to focus my energies. I tend to be a big proponent of 'live and let live' kind of thinking. :)
I love that one guy's signature the Northern Illinois University...

... as if there were more than one to choose from!
The last two seasons Marshall spent in the MAC seemed most MAC fans preferred to post all the different reasons they hated Marshall as opposed to why they supported their respective teams. It is amazing how Still the mere mention of Marshall starts a feeding frenzy. What's even more amazing is some of the most extreme Herd Haters don't even post anymore I'd love to see what they would have said. On second thought I don
That's pretty bad that some would use the movie as a basis for smack talk.

I definitely want to see the movie. I can kind of remember when it happened.
Thanks for the support guys. Marshall loves being in CUSA, your schools and fans have been first class all the way. The MAC has always suffered from the "little man" syndrome of being in the Big 10's shadows.
Just a very sad and pathetic post over on that board. I hope USM kicks OU's back sides by 30 points and doesn't stop til the whistle blows!

This is where the movie will get its premire. Thats the Keith Albee theater in Huntington. It was built in 1928 and is currently under restoration.

As far as MAC fans, I think its funny. I could care less if this movie makes it to #1 or stays at the bottom, if 1 person that had no idea about this tragedy walks away and was touched then the movie was a success.
It boils down to 2 things: A general feeling of superiority over people from West Virginia and the fact that when we came back we dominated their football programs.

I tried to make friends over there back in '97 only to be blasted off the boards by some of the most crass individuals I have ever engaged.

Still today, they hate us, not for what we are but WHO were are - according to them, a bunch of hillbilly, redneck trailer trash. Bias and prejudice comsume them.

My latest encounter met my expectations of them. My wife and I watched the Marshall/USM game at the Embassy suites in Charleston. There was a large contingent of Marshall folks but after the game had started, a group of 12-13 yo boys came in, sat down and started yelling "Marshall Sucks". They clapped and laughed at every miscue and harrassed older fans next to them. Then some of the dads started coming in, laughing with the boys and egging them on.

Finally I had enough. I caught one of the "fathers" as he was walking out and asked him where he was from. Miami of Ohio. I said that I thought they were either from WVU or a Mac school. He said No, we're OSU fans. I asked why his kids were yelling Marshall Sucks then, since his affiliation was OSU. He didn't respond.

This type of behavior is not only allowed but encouraged by MAC fans. That's why NOTHING surprises me from them and I expect them to set the bar in classlessness when it comes to Marshall-bashing.

Good ridance to them. I haven't visited a MAC board this decade, nor did I hit the link. I can only imagine what was said and I garrantee one thing: My imagination will pale in comparison to the level they actually took.
Venom from MAC fans and their excuses are lame.

MAC fans have short memories because, well, they spend more time following Ohio State or Michigan than they do their paltry cellar dwellars who give tickets away for cans of food.

Most of today's MAC fans will tell you that their hatred towards Marshall, at least those on that particular message board, started when Marshall fans started rubbing Marshall's victory after victory in their faces.

What those guys conveniently leave out was the very hard feelings that the Marshall fanbase felt towards the MAC for the Herd's ouster. You see the Herd's ouster had as much to do with Marshall's facilities as it did for Marshall's probation, which got Marshall one year of probation, a post-season ban (as if there was any chance Marshall was making the post-season) and zero scholarship reductions.

It is well documented what Marshall's administration was found guilty of in 1968-69 (Nearly 40 years ago now). A 68-69 season that saw Marshall steamroll opponents to the tune of a whopping 3-16-1 record btw.

So while Marshall got the ole heave-ho from the MAC.

And in 1997 when Marshall was brought back to the MAC, in no small part because of seven visits to the 1-aa national title game, facility improvements and large fan base, there were still quite a few of The Faithful who still harbored some hard feelings.

So the Marshall people who peruse these boards found the MAC board, since there were not too many individual school boards worth visiting.

And what did we find? Marshall sucks, 1-aa doesn't mean squat, you're going to get your comeuppance when you get back. Probation, booted from the MAC, yada yada yada.

So after sitting back and taking that crap on top of some old memories, when Marshall started to win, and win, and win, and win big, The Faithful lashed back.

And even then it wasn't too bad, until the MAC board let loose a drunken rambler named Harry Horsepower, one of the three dozen Western Michigan fans on the planet.
Harry's complete bombardment of the MAC board with his Marshall hatred actually caused the MAC board to shut down and move from FansOnly to another server and is largely responsible for how the board ended up with NCAAbbs.

Pretty much the olive branch was burned to the ground. And then the Miami fans, who just couldn't stand the fact that the Cradle of Coaches continued to fall short in the East Division and the Toledo fans, who continued to fall short in the title game, started to really ramp up their venom.

The reason the MAC fans feel that there was much more venom from the Marshall fans than there was from all the other MAC posters combined was because there were more Marshall posters than all the other MAC posters combined.

And for the poster to insinuate that Marshall had quelled their venom in the final two years because of a fall off, it is an inaccurate representation of the facts, considering that Marshall finised 8-4 in 2003, including a win at #3 Kansas State and would have been in a bowl game in a real conference, and finished 6-5, including close losses at Ohio State and Georgia in 2004 and earned a bowl, and had a two game lead in the MAC East until a complete collapse that to this day hasn't been recovered from, with three games to play.
And Miami won the MAC East that year, despite losing to Marshall for the sixth time in seven years.

There was no need for the Marshall faithful to quell their enthusiasm, because we were right in the thick of it every year we were there.

Of course there was no poor treatment of the Marshall fans over the CUSA overtures.

So we finally get to CUSA and for two years we've enjoyed ourselves in the football side of CUSA and we are beginning our second venture through the cellar of the basketball side of CUSA.
As you read here every week fans are impressed by the treatment from Marshall fans, win or lose. And it isn't like Marshall hasn't handed some teams their asses home or away, or that we haven't had ours handed to us. There has been plenty of opportunity for us to show our bad side.

We love CUSA. We're thrilled beyond all comprehension to be out of the MAC.

And threads like the above mentioned one on the MAC board are only noticed when people bring them here.

The MAC is right back to what it was before Marshall got there in 1997. Irrelevant.
