Kent State Portal review ...
6-8/F Morales - Boston University

6-0/PG Medley - St. Louis U.

6-4/W Barret - Presbyterian

6-4/W Safford* - Miami (O).

6-2/PG Sumlin** JUCO

After losing starting G Sullinger, and the bulk of the bench, did Kent improve its roster via The Portal? * arrived second semester, ** is a spring JUCO signing.

Most curious to me is Morales, although Medley/Sumlin cover a glaring need at PG. The plus is both will be sophomores and the double plus is both were starters as freshmen, albeit with modest numbers.

Your Thoughts -

Yeah, technically Sumlin came via the portal because that is the current method of transferring, but he is really just an old-fashioned JUCO to 4-year college recruit. And don't forget that being a sophomore certainly doesn't mean they will be here for three years, as now a player can transfer every year with no penalty.

I would expect Barret to have major impact. He averaged 15pts a game last season and was 2nd team All-Conference. Sounds like a good defender too with .9 blocks per game.

Agreed ... but,

Sumlin was a redshirt at UTEP before going juco which means he has had a year of D1 coaching, along with a year as a juco PG starter on one of the better juco teams in the nation. His offensive numbers were not stellar by any means, but he did rebound and assist at a good clip. Also, being named MVP in his conference (considering his mundane offensive numbers) tells me coaches saw/valued some intangibles that showed themselves on the court.

As for transferring again ... can't predict that one way or another.
