New Texans helmet pays homage to Rice?
There have been some leaked images of new Houston Texans helmet designs today. One uses the olde English font and a lot of people have noticed the similarity to Rice’s helmet. Thoughts?

Eta-got rid of my original link because of shared image issues

Egad, that is not just awful, but tragically, stupidly so.
It manages to preserve the visual complexity and esotericness of the Old English design while completely obliterating its classicism and elegance -- the qualities which are its ENTIRE raison d'être.). Only a mental deficient could come up with it, and only other mental deficients could think it was worth mocking up and showing to others rather than instantly deep-sixing it.

I'm not sure there is any other field of business that is more uniformly populated by BAD practitioners than is graphic design in sports. Sigh.

Awful. The article calls it - looks like an XFL helmet. And awfully close to a Haunted Mansion font isn't it?

RE: New Texans helmet pays homage to Rice?
One thing I'm curious about. I read a comment somewhere that the H was an attempt to emphasize Houston over Texas.

Going back to the founding of the franchise, the name Texans was derided by many as lacking imagination. But there were indications that it was chosen as an attempt at building a statewide fan base. The Dallas Cowboys are already well established, but it seems there are almost as many Cowboys haters as Cowboys lovers, so there might be some significant value in becomin Texas's team versus "America's team." Apparently their marketing people looked at baseball, where the Rangers are perceived as Texas's team with the Astros as Houston's team. For example, go into a sports apparel store in San Antonio or Austin, and you will see 5-10 times as much Rangers logo items as Astros logo items, even though the Astros have been around a decade longer.

That being the case, I sort of wonder about switching the emphasis from Texas to Houston. I wonder what their marketing analysis says.
