RE: 35 Worst College Football Stadiums
My least favorite stadiums are the generic ones... I get that "fan experience" plays into things...for instance, I "like" Lincoln Financial field when the Eagles are playing there, but it's terrible when you're sitting in it with 7k Temple and 15k Cincinnati fans...I enjoy stadiums that have a personality to them.
So, for instance, I don't really like Marshall's Joan C. Edwards stadium...it's dirty and grimy and it's made up of generic, erector set stands. Yeah, OK, the seats are green...got it. But it could be any number of other stadiums, really. And the one, distinguishing factor is the "South" endzone stands which are crammed in there at a weird angle that doesn't fit the rest of the stadium, which is (IMO) not attractive. So I give it a low score for the times I have been there...both rooting for Marshall (I used to live near Huntington) and as a Bearcat fan.
I'll take an opposite example: Notre Dame stadium. It's not the "capacity" that makes this stand out: the WHOLE stadium is incredible. It's set on Campus--you can't get there without getting into the "Notre Dame" experience. The expansions were tastefully done and "fit" the original Stadium's mystique. And, most importantly, you KNOW when you're in Notre Dame stadium...it's unique, special.
Nippert is like that: it's a "one of a kind" stadium. It's part of the Campus. It is, quintessentially, "Cincinnati." It doesn't matter that it "only" seats 40k: in fact, that's part of the appeal (to me). It oozes history...both the good and the bad. You're never going to confuse Nippert with any other place.
Again, I'll counter-balance here. I've never been to ECU's Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, but I don't see much interesting there. It's a generic, bowl stadium. Yeah, it's got purple seats and they'll play Jimmi Hendrix as the team runs out, but it's just a big-ish bowl. Pirate fans love the place but I just always get a "Meh!" feeling about it. ECU folks will always counter with the "Capacity" argument, but...
If I were going to point out the "lowest" stadiums in the P conferences, I'd look at Kentucky (SEC), Duke (ACC), Kansas (B12) [it's being renovated, I know], Utah (PAC/B12) [I liked their OLD Stadium better], and both Michigan and Michigan State and Purdue (Big 10) as pretty boring and uninspiring stadiums.
