Recent Final Four Teams
Since 2019 (4 seasons), going into this year's tournament, there had not been a single team repeat as a Final Four team. (Villanova and Kansas both appeared in 2018 and 2022)
2019: Virginia, Texas tech, Auburn, Michigan State
2021: Baylor, Gonzaga, Houston, UCLA
2022: Kansas ,UNC, duke, Villanova
2023: UConn, Miami, SDSU, FAU
Congrats to UConn for repeating as a Final Four team when it has been hard to do so recently.
Alabama fits the "new norm" of new teams showing up.
TN/Purdue will also create a new team not already on the list.
NC State would be new and make 19 teams in 20 possible spots. Duke would be a repeat.
Obviously 5 years is not a lot of data, especially with less data for NIL. But I wonder if this will be the norm or a fluke. I don't have the wherewithal to do a historical analysis on "most unique final four teams in a 5 year period" but I'm sure someone could tell me.

Pretty hilarious considering the thread we had the other day with someone speculating that NIL would prevent all but the very best from having any shot at all at a title in the future.

NIL hasn't taken full effect yet.
And we had some longshot Final Fours like FAU, Texas Tech, Miami, and San Diego State who likely won't make a Final Four again in the next 20 years. I wouldn't say never with Auburn with Bruce Pearl there but I'd say they'd be a longshot too. The way Virginia has been playing they look like they won't be making a Final Four anytime soon let alone a Sweet 16. And Baylor's lost in the 2nd round 3 straight years with their national championship during the COVID-19 year so I'm losing faith in them. When I think of the schools NIL will help it's more like the North Carolina's, Duke's, Kansas's, and Kentucky's (if Calipari can get out of his own way but then again we were saying the same thing about Purdue and they're in the Elite 8).
